Title: Firm, Medium, or Medium Firm Mattress for a nearly 3 year old
Post by: linny75 on June 27, 2013, 21:52:37 pm
Hi ladies
Our toddler who will be 3 this september will be moving into a adult sized single bed. I know that kids shouldn't sleep on soft mattresses, but does anyone know if Firm, Medium-Firm, or Medium Mattress would be best for him. We live in the UK, and Firm, Medium-Firm, Medium or Soft seem to be the choices. Or, would either of those 3 be suitable?

Thanks!!

I'd go firm or medium-firm if my kids' preferences are anything to go by. Heck, they each spent months avoiding the bed entirely and sleeping on their floors anyway - Natalie is now 8YO and made me pack up her bed and sleeps on a sleeping bag on the floor now! ;D

Also means that when we go camping it's not such a big adjustment.

Thanks Deb!

Anyone else? I'd like to get a few opinions to get a consensus, thank you so much!

My 5yo's mattress is rock hard and he sleeps fine on it

My DD's is medium and she loves it. It feels very soft to me but when I researched which to get (also here in UK) it said toddlers shouldn't sleep in firm mattresses because they weigh so little. Obviously an adult's weight is very different from a child's and the ratings are based on adult weights not childrens. So what is medium to an adult would be firm to a child as it won't give under their weight the same.

ooh i'm really confused now..most of the research i've done this morning for children's mattresses says firm or medium firm. It's so hard to know what is correct!

Anyone else with experience?

I guess it depends as well if it is a 'forever' mattress. If it's going on a full size bed and he'll be sleeping on it til he goes to college, that's different than if it's a toddler bed where the mattress only has to last for a few years.

I agree with Anna....both my lo's mattresses will be replaced once they are both reliably dry at night which will not be anytime soon. I think for a toddler I would not worry too much about it tbh.

We bought a cheaper, softer mattress for DS - all the reviews said the softer mattresses are better for young children because they are so light. DS sleeps really well on his. A friend has just sold a nice firm mattress because her 6yo was not comfortable sleeping on it (and she's heavy and tall for her age), she has replaced it with a memory foam topped one.

When we change DD's toddler bed to a full size single I will get a softer one for her and then replace with better quality once they are both bigger!
