Title: Starting solids w MFPI baby. Terrified.
Post by: draxela on September 03, 2013, 09:54:49 am
Hi guys

DD2 is nearly 6 mths and I'm feeling totally confused and scared about starting solids  ???
There's just so much conflicting info out there and unfortunately we've never got to baseline through my milk (or at least we've never eradicated the mucous).

At the moment I know for sure that she's intolerant of dairy, soy, wheat and eggs plus others as yet unidentified. Her symptoms are mucous in poos, congestion, slight rashes, reflux and wakefulness. She's generally a pretty happy, if spirited, little munchkin.

Anyone out there with some BTDT advice? Where do I start? Meat broth? Pears? Potatoes? Pumpkin? Carrot juice? Rice cereal? Argh!

Thanks in advance!

HI there, wow what a lot of things you have to contend with! I would definitely start really slowly and one thing every 3/4 days. Rice isn't a good starter for any child TBH. I would start with some fruit or veg, add some meats in later to get the iron. Chicken stock is fab as it is full of calcium and can heal the digestive system. A lot of people stay clear of grains to start with. You may as well leave them for a few weeks as there are so many fruit/veg you can start with. Good Luck x

Hi there,

My DS2 is MSPI.  He is on an amino acid based formula as he had blood and mucous in his stool.  I tried brown rice cereal to start since it is gluten free and it didn't go well (I tried it at about 4.5 months though), so now at 6 months we are starting over.  I've been doing bananas for the past 4 days and it seems to be working a little better.  I had also tried pears at 4.5 months and while they are generally a safe fruit for a baby with allergies, it seemed to increase his reflux.  Tomorrow we'll be trying sweet potatoes.

Agree with Buntybear - fruits and veg are the way to go and going slow makes the most sense for babies like ours!

Hugs honey.

Well I can tell you what has been safe for T...he has multiple intolerances too including probable intolerances to too much sugar and fructose.

Once he had a healed gut this was the order of food our biomed pead suggested we introduce.

First and safe food - (I've omitted all foods that we discover caused issues like pear)
Pumpkin, chicken broth, millet cerial.

Leafy greens ie kale, lettuce, bok choy, leave spinach till a bit older ie 8-9 mths.
Banana, apples (be careful with both.)
Avocado, sweet potato, yams, carrots etc
Legumes ie chickpeas, kidney and cannelloni beans. (Lovely blended with pumpkin and later oncoconut milk)
Lamb, then chicken. Beef later on as cow intolerances.
Broccoli, cauli, brown rice, quinoa
Coconut and olive oil for cooking.

HTH Hun. Take it really slow. We were told to introduce e ry 2-3 days. Worst advice for us ever as come 3 weeks when T was terrible, I had no idea at all what the problem was :(

Thank you SO much ladies! We're on day 3 of chicken broth (1 tsp in the morning) and so far so good.
