Title: egg sensitive--flu shot, MMR concerns--blood test?
Post by: baabaa on November 07, 2013, 16:15:56 pm
Hi,  My 10mo son *may* have an egg allergy. We have a family history of serious allergies, so I've been religious about waiting four days between foods, except one time when I accidentally scrambled a whole egg for finger food and not just the egg yolk.  The yolks have been fine, but after touching the egg white--not even eating it as I realized what I'd done--he broke out into a spotty rash. No more egg whites for us for a while! So yesterday I went to the GP for his flu shot, and we ended up getting a referral for a blood test for egg allergy.  Has anyone had this done for their LO?

My DS had an allergy/ intolerance to egg for a while (not sure which is was really but he had skin reactions where it touched him and his eyes did swell up a second time). He had a skin prick test at 2 and then an egg challenge in the hospital after the skin prick was negative. I delayed his MMR because of the egg but before he had his skin prick test they had changed the guidelines here and said it was safe to have even with an egg allergy.

I have read somewhere (here probably!) that blood tests for allergies were unreliable for babies/ toddlers :-\

We had it done for my egg allergic ds1. We first did a scratch test, did half the vaccine, wait half an hour, then the other half and wait some more. He has a history of anaphylaxis to egg, and he was fine with the vaccine. I believe the latest research suggests that there no reason for kids allergic to eggs to avoid mmr. Lemme see if I can dig it up...

Can't find the one for mmr, but the flu shot is the same issue. Hope u get a chance to talk to your doctor about it!

Really skin prick and blood tests only point to possible allergies...the only sure bet is to have a reaction as false positives (or negatives) are common. We did delay mmr for DD2, she can eat eggs now and is all caught up with that vax. We dont do the flu shot though. Her blood test for egg showed nothing but based on rxn the dr declared her allergic.
