Title: Help 11 month old sudden NW + EW
Post by: MumAnzy on November 07, 2013, 23:48:01 pm
Hello

We tried cow's milk about 10 days ago for 2 days and had to stop as LO is still showing signs of allergy. Minhave now cut off all dairy for a week but ever since we have been having.  NW with him waking and crying and sitting or standing in cot.  He knows how to lay back down but doesnt seem to be doing it.  We have had to go constantly and lay him down give him paci/dummy and his plush animalmthat he sleeps with.  Things have been under control somfar but I feel they are getting out of hand.  He sometimes wakes as well as 5 and can get him to go back till 6, lucky if 6:30.

He used to sleep in till almost 7 and be happy when he woke and we left him for a while talking happy tomhimself.  I dont think it is teething, as he recently had his 2 first teeth but giving calpol around 11 pm sould keep him out of pain.  I dont know if he has lost ability to self soothe.

Here is what his schedule looks like.  He has been on EASY since birth.

6/6:30. Wake up + bottle
8 am breakfast
9 am nap (goes to sleep on his own)
10 am wake up (sometimes till 10:30)
11 am bottle (transitioning to sippy cup)
1-1:30 lunch
2 pm nap (goes down on his own) (sometimes wakes up and needs resettleling after an hour, other times not)
3:30/4 awake + bottle (4pm) (might not drink it in sippy cup)
6 pm dinner
7 pm bath +'bottle asleep by 7:30

NW happening at various times, like 11 or 1 or 3 or 5

Please ifnthere is anything anyone can think of to help I would greatly appreciate!

Hi hun, taking a look and it seems there are a few things going on. I'll try and address each one.
We tried cow's milk about 10 days ago for 2 days and had to stop as LO is still showing signs of allergy.

That's not abnormal at all. Is he milk intolerant is he on special formula?

with him waking and crying and sitting or standing in cot.  He knows how to lay back down but doesnt seem to be doing it.  We have had to go constantly and lay him down give him paci/dummy and his plush animalmthat he sleeps with.

My suggestion is stop laying him down. If he knows how it's know a game. He'll call and call/cry until you come in because he knows if he lays down you wont come.  What we did was pat the mattress and say the sleepy phrase but not pick him up, not touch him just talk quietly to him until he laid down on his own then walked out as long as he wasn't crying.  As for the paci if he can replug it himself than it woudl be the same you can put a bunch in his crib so you know he can find them if he wants them and show him where they are (same with his lovey) but don't give it to him, just show him where they are and he can get it himself. This is his way of getting you to come in. Once he knows it's not going to work it may stop all together.

I dont know if he has lost ability to self soothe.
Does he SS at night or for naps? If he does than it's not a self soothe issue as he can self soothe to sleep it might be a developmental or routine issue.

Looking at your routine I think he's a bit UT and you are starting the 2-1 transition. Most kids his age are doing A times that are longer than 3 hour. I think you need to start thinking about perhaps capping one of the naps and extending his awake time in the morning. Typically if that morning nap is too early and is long they start treating it as an extension of their night sleep if that makes sense. They just treat those 3hrs as a long NW.  Have a look at these links and see if they can help.   Maybe start pushing that first nap out.

Anyone want to talk about the 2-1 transition - #25

Sample EASY Routines from 0 - 13mths+

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for replies!

Last night was better.  Do think he might be teething again. Unfortunately hismteething lasts long and he only has 2 so am bracing myself for anothervround.  A lot of the times the night crying is accompained bybgas so have tried cutting out gas producingbfoods.

Las night my husband quickly wentnin twice and the other two times he didn need us coming ins. By 6:15 am he was up. I went and didnthe patting on mattress with phrase and he would lay down but not sleep. I stayed doing for about 20 mins and then just started day as he was wide awake.

I dont think he is under tired, he goes 3 hrs between awake time, then 4 till next nap and 4 till night time and he is usually tired by the time come to sleep comes.  I suppose I could push the morning awake time but then wouldnt his whole eating schedule shift?  When he was waking at 7-8 and I kept him AW for 3 hours it seemed he was then eating at really strange hours.  Or if I push nap from 10-11 do I wake him at 11 or let him sleep longer? And then afternoon nap would be at 3 pm till 5 and then an 8:30 pm sleep time instead of 7:30? Or do I keep him longer in am, but cut his nap at 45 mins?
Sorry for all questions!  Things schedule wise seem pretty good exceopt for how nughts have started to go....Thanks again mums!

The night before he woke at 6:15 what time did he go to bed? As for the wakings my thoughts are that the first A is too short and the second A might be too long? I'm not entirely sure only you know your lo but did you take a look at the links above for some ideas about what a routine may look like with a longer A in the AM, Or a shorter A and shorter nap? I woudln't push his nap by an hour.

As for eating worry less about what time (clock wise) they are eating..base it more on their routine if that makes sense. My lo eats lunch at 2 because his nap is at lunch time so he eats a snack before nap and lunch after. So my clock standards it's a late lunch but it works for us. Some people do 1/2 a lunch before a nap and 1/2 after .It really all depends what works for you and your lo.

Remind me if your lo is low sleep needs or high sleep needs, or average?

My lo is lsn so I won't give my routine for that age as we were already on our way to one nap and he was doing 4hrs in the AM and a shorter PM of 2.5hrs after a cat nap. But my suggestion is to push the first nap by 30min and cut the nap to maybe an hour and see if that helps.  Then if it doesn't start cutting that am nap even more.  You can do short AM and a cn long pm nap, or longer awake time in the AM, long nap and then a CN in the PM (this is what I did.)

Thanks Skadiver! Last night was finally perfect.  He had slept in till 7:45 as he was tired from all NW night before.  That meant his schedule was shifted somewhat and he had a very short am nap at 10:40 (20 mins) amd about 1.5 hr nap in the afternoon (1:45-3:15) and to bed by 7.  He slept the whole night till 6 am then we gave him paci at that time and he went till 7:15.  Also, we gave him calpol instead of nurofen.  Think it works better with pain and 2 top teeth might finally be out.  Hoping tonight goes as well but will def cut his am nap to 1hr or 45 mins and see how it carries on.  Gotta go wake him! Thanks!
