I'm on the hunt for a set for my trailer loving boy for Christmas but I don't really know what to look for. I hardly ever go into a toy store but I did today and there's just nothing like what I'm after, so I thought with world wide BW knowledge I might be able to come up with some ideas that I can then see if I can find somewhere in NZ!!
The problem is we have a few trailers for his matchbox type cars, but they aren't very interchangeable which frustrates him (eg he wants the green truck to tow the horse float but it can't because they don't line up properly. Or what he's LOVE to do above all else would be to connect all his trailers into a long line but our trailers can't tow anything (I've tried explaining that that doesn't happen in real life! :P). So I'd love a set that had a couple of vehicles that towed different things that he could swap around. The other thing I thought of was a airport baggage carrier cart set since that is one instance where a car does carry multiple trailers.
And yes I do realise that trains do the same thing, and he does love trains, but not as much as trailers, so I'd love to search something out if I can. He spends ages creating his own towing systems for his bigger cars out of rubber bands and various other things!

There are duplo vehicles which can have trailers attach and although a regular trailer wouldn't have a hook on the back end to attach another trailer some of the duplo designs do have a back hook so a long line could be made. The zoo or safari truck have trailers which connect in a long line. It might be a case of buying various bits and put it all together as a package rather than buying one new toy iyswim.
For instance DS has the duplo zoo van which has trailers, like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lego-DUPLO-Zoo-Van-Two-Trailers-Four-Animals-Printed-Brick-and-Keeper-/161083907351?nma=true&si=ZnMFweKk6zirOCx%252Bcb7wx69qvTs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
the trailers are really just wheels sets but you can buy different things to go on them which make them look more trailer-like.
The wheel sets are the same for the train (some of the wheels look a bit different but they all attach onto each other so it is fine, totally interchangeable, mine makes a super long train with many carriages then the zoo van attached to the back end - certainly doesn't happen like that in real life but he loves doing this long train) so you could buy multiple wheel sets and then various additions to make each one different?
here's some ideas for either things that go on the standard wheel sets or for other types of trailer (including those which may not have a back hook to make a long line but still offer lots of variety with game play by swapping parts around), although you say he is not so much into trains any of the 'trains' carriages here can hook onto a tractor or van etc so can be used imaginatively to carry any type of cargo.

Sorry, I got a bit carried away with links there as I started seeing things DS would love to add to his long trailer/carriage collection!!
We only have a couple of duplo people and one duplo animal, mostly we use other little characters and small toy animals sets inside the trailers, wooden letter blocks as cargo etc.

Can you get SIKU brand cars and trucks in NZ? They are really good quality and they have everything. My DS loves them. They come in matchbox car sizes (like Hotwheels size?) and in various sizes up to outdoor sandbox size. (They have proper ratios to describe the sizes but I couldn't tell you what they are!)
Here are the tractors with trailers range
http://www.siku.de/en/sikumodelle/1/tractor-with-trailer.html
And here are the various trailers individually
http://www.siku.de/en/sikumodelle/1/trailer-2-axled.html
Oh - loaders
http://www.siku.de/en/sikumodelle/1/low-loader-with-john-deere-tractors.html
The ratio is in the top corner (1:87 or 1:32 etc).

Agree with pps and adding bruder brand. They are similar to siku with miniatures of many brands of contruction o farming vehicles and accessories. The metal diecast ones are very robust.
I even got a minuscule set of tractors and trailers and they work really really well except the rubbery bits. Eg, we have this set: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?type=2&campid=5335841846&toolid=10001&customid=nx2&ext=280702205189&item=280702205189
Everything is great except the front loader bucket because one part of the arm is rubber.

I was also going to say Siku...expensy but good quality. Toyworld have them...

Duplo too. Have you been to kmart at all they have some cheaper brands - plastic though but they do a tractor trailer (quite big)

Thanks ladies!!
He'll be 4 in March and has already been into lego since last Christmas so I'm not keen to go back to Duplo and Megablocks looks like it might be similar (we've never had either).
We do have Siku here (I only know because I looked at that link Mashi and saw that we have this: http://www.siku.de/en/sikumodelle/1/truck-with-tractors.html! So that's good to know. And since I know the brand I could get some trailers that I know will match with those tractors (and I saw that we have an ambulance and concrete mixer and possibly a few others from that range too) and if Toyworld is the place to go, then that's great, thanks Sara. We don't do toyshops very often, and I'm not really up with what's out there!
-
We have the ambo and a small concrete mixer and they are great!
-
We have the concrete mixer too but the tow bar has come off. I know they are a good brand so I'm a bit ::) that he's managed to do it. Though I imagine it IS because he's trying to force ones that just won't fit.
I've been sitting here for ages trying to figure out what to get ::). There's a good online sale on at the mo. Problem is hed' love them all!!
-
Ugh, that happened to Zs tractor trailer set (the small matchbox size john deer one) he broke the trailer link ::)
Does playmobil have anything good? It's pricy here though!
-
Price is a little :o but cool all the same

Good heavens!!! :o Here I have thought we get ripped off living in Europe (I'm from Canada) with prices on things. Everything here is so expensive, but that is shocking. To compare, that same set here is 33 euros, which converts to 54 NZ$...vs the 120 NZ$ over there! Is everything so expensive in NZ, just a higher cost of living, or is it just because it is an import? That is even more expensive than in Scandinavia and even breathing is expensive in Norway :P I reckon getting it shipped in from over here would just get you dinged with an import charge, wouldn't it? ???
-
I can't believe the price of that trailer thing!! I looked it up and it's £25 here which I think is $50 NZ. I'm happy to get things and send it to either of you. I think if it's marked as a gift you don't get charged for toys?
-
It's because it's an import, some things are so pricy some are not. ::) I got my angelcare monitors in the uk when dad did a trip because they were less than half the price of here even once converted!
Jenny I could get my parents to pick one up if you wanted too if they can find it, then bring it back with them, then I could post down....
Shiv your a sweetie thank you :-*
-
:o :o :o :o (where's the keel over and die icon?!). Our cost of living isn't high - it's because it's expensive to import things. You should see the price of books here!! Thank the Lord for bookdepository! I am a quilter and to order from the US including shipping is still way less (probably just over half) what it is to buy here. I was reading an article the other day and I can't remember what the product was, but they were saying that 1 Walmart in the States orders more of whatever it is than all of NZ which is why we had to pay so much here for whatever-it-was. They're talking about getting stricter on GST you pay on things ordered overseas which is understandable considering the $$ that they must be losing out on, but ugh it will be devastating to loose out on the good deals!
Tractors are one thing we do have a lot of (because of that tractor transporter we have) - I think we have 3 so I'll get a couple of trailers for them plus a couple more vehicles and a couple of generic trailers. And I found this so he can cart round all sorts of things even if they don't have tow bars! http://www.iqtoys.co.nz/product/13831805/siku-super-mini---breakdown-truck-with-van-1667/ Plus I'll get http://www.iqtoys.co.nz/product/7460087/siku-super-mini---mega-lifter-1623/ and he'll be over the moon and as excited as can be!
Thanks for the offers though ladies - I may just have to take you up on that in the future- it is so ridiculous to pay more just because some companies won't ship to NZ! :-*

And jenny all the plastic stuff from china is so cheap I find. Good stuff from uk, Europe and US is pricy.
(Sorry OT but where do you get your fabric)

So true. We are very careful about what toys and how many toys we let into the house, so we want good quality!!
;) ;) iqtoys.co.nz have siku cheap at the mo. Toyworld has them 20% off too but they're still quite a bit dearer than iqtoys.
Some of my favourite fabric stores are
fabricshack.com
hawthornethreads.com
fatquartershop.com
hancocksofpanducah.com
fabric.com
I've been a part of a few co-ops of people who want just a few yards of fabric - multiple people getting together to order to maximize the amount of fabric you can get for one postage charge. One is organised through FB so I can add you if you want. That could be a dangerous offer though, I'm warning you!

:-* I'll have a looksie - and pm you later
