Title: Milk and feeding routine for 12 month old - in need of serious help
Post by: Joanne L on February 17, 2014, 19:36:29 pm
Hi

My son is 12 months old and I think we have a severe case of accidental parenting.  I'm having severe problems getting my son to sleep, and I think much of it is due to his refusal to eat - as he used to sleep before but it got much worse with him not eating.  I put him in the high chair and he just point blank refuses food - this has been getting worse and worse to the extent that he will only take his bottle.  This has been going on for weeks now, so I can safely rule out teething, we don't try to force feed, and we don't make a fuss of it either.  I've also tried any amount of foods - even his firm favourites and this is a no no too.

I think some of this is our routine and what we are doing as I am reading that many people are giving only 2 bottles at this stage.  I'm hoping people will share theirs - in terms of time, but also how much milk / no of bottles per day.

Breakfast. About 7.00. We offer solids and finger food first.  Solids can range from cereal (porridge and ready brek) to yoghurt.  Finger food can be toast, fruit, etc.  Followed by approx. 150 ml milk.

Lunch. About 12 noon.  We offer solids - most of which are from the Annabel Karmel Recipe book - so chicken curry, veggie, pasta etc. followed by yoghurt or a fruit compot.  Finger food can be cheese, fruit, rice cakes. Followed by approx. 60 ml milk.

Tea. About 4.30. We offer solids and finger food similar to lunch.  Followed by approx. 60 ml milk.

Supper.  About 6.30 - We offer 210 ml milk.

We also water / very diluted juice in between.

Here's hoping someone can help!!
Luv from a very sleepy mum.

Have you seen our FAQ with example routines? Routines for Solids and Bottles/BF's 6-12months

Does he eat nothing solid at all? Did he used to eat and now isn't or has he never been into his solids?

Has he been getting teeth? I know you say it has been going on too long but sometimes they get one tooth after another and then associate the pain with eating even after the teething pain has gone.

I think you can really just continue to offer a variety of foods. Do you eat together as a family? Will he eat any food off your plate?

Hi

Yes.  I've just seen that post and saved it as a bookmark.

It's really started since Xmas and got worse and worse.  Before he would eat plenty - 100 - 150g of savoury food followed by a yoghurt, alongside finger food and then milk.  He would eat a wide variety of meals (Annabel karmel recipes) and finger food - especially fruit - kiwi, strawberries, apples, etc. Then it went to about 75, and now I'm lucky if I can get 2 - 3 spoonfuls into him, before he clams up.  The only thing I can get into him is dairylea cheesy strips and cheerios - as long as he can eat them himself - he refuses any cereal that involves lumps in it!

He got 3 teeth at the same time just before xmas, and another one recently.  I do think teething could be an issue on some days, but not every day and he's just so happy - other than when we are trying to feed him and all of the other signs of teething just aren't there.

What I'm not sure of is whether I should have cut his bottles down to 2 by now, or if not, whether I should give him his bottle at the different time to what I do no (i.e. not in the highchair after his meal).

 :)

It's possible he is holding out for the milk then so maybe separating the two would help.

Have you started transitioning his feeds to a cup yet? The UK recs are to start this transition at 6mo and stop bottles by 12mo and use a free flow sippy or open cup instead. I know many people use bottles past this age though, especially for that BT feed.

Is it cows milk he is having or still formula? What about offering just a little cows milk in a sippy alongside his meals instead of a bottle afterwards.

Have you tried just giving him the spoon and letting him feed himself rather than trying to spoon feed him? Yes it is messy but sometimes they just need that independence.

Here in the uk we are recommended to give 300ml or a little more of cows milk (or the equivalent in dairy products) after 12mo but I know in other countries such as USA the recs are more like 480-600ml. Milk is just a drink now though and it is better to get the nutrients from a varied diet than a purely liquid one.
