Title: Night wakings causing me sleep deprivation issues
Post by: embeth on March 16, 2014, 16:36:43 pm
Hi!  I'm new to the board and getting worried that my 4.5 mo's night wakings are creating severe sleep deprivation issues for me.

DS used to slept for 5-7 hours at a stretch starting at about 5 weeks old.  Around 2-2.5 months, he started waking a second time.  Over the past week or two, he has consistently started waking up 3 times a night.  This has meant that I don't get more that 2-3 hours at a stretch, and I am so tired and anxious that I am starting to have trouble sleeping at all. (I have to get up for work by 5:30, which creates an extra trouble spot.)

So we are trying to come up with a new approach but aren't sure what to do.

More details on our current situation:
-DS is exclusively breastfed.
-He eats during the day every 2.5 to 3 hours.  He has been eating less during the day (as far as I can tell), so I am making a concerted effort to get him to eat more during waking hours.  (Increasing frequency doesn't seem to help, so I am trying to wear a nursing cover to keep him from getting distracted at each nursing session.)
-He goes to sleep around 7PM, wakes at 9:30PM, 1AM, and 4AM.  At 9:30, he seems very hungry and I have been feeding from both breasts.  At the other two times, I have tried feeding from both sides and not; he seems to fall asleep equally well in either case and sleep just as long.
-My husband has sleep issues so I have been primarily responsible for the baby at night.  Last night, he did try putting the baby back to sleep at 9:30PM and 1AM. Unsuccessful both times but delayed the eating 30-45 minutes.

Next we want to try having my husband take over the 1AM feeding, with expressed breast milk, with the idea that we can slowly try to decrease and then eliminate that feeding.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to make DS go hungry or hurt my supply, but I am also REALLY struggling with the current situation.

Hi Hon- Can you please post your routine in an

format so we can tell how things are going through the day? Sometimes around 4 months things can get wonky!
