Title: This much gas from breastfeeding?
Post by: 1stimer on June 24, 2014, 16:13:58 pm
DS was born 6 weeks early so Im not quite sure what could be causing what appears to be very bad gas. I burp him half way through his feed and then after. Hes very hard to burp and sometimes and it can take up to an hr to get a burp but I was told that's normal bc they don't get as much air from the breast. I cant really describe the sound but its like a long grunt or strain. He poops totally fine, but I have noticed its very loud and very gassy sounding. Its been keeping him up at night for several hours at a time. I rub his belly and move his legs and it helps but the second I stop he starts grunting. What else can I do? I know they have gas drops and we tried them once but im not sure if it helped so I don't want to give it again. Hes such a sweet baby and It breaks my heart to see him hurting. We go to the MD on Friday so I will mention it to her but I was hoping to find something else that would help until then.

Some meds for gas like Infacol (simeticone) have a cumulative effect so would need to be given regularly to have any effect.

My two,  especially DS1, were very gassy but seemed to grow out of it. I think my fast let down didn't help as he gulped air in trying to cope with the flow.  Could that be an issue for you perhaps? I found feeding him with his head higher than his tummy helped.

What are your best winding tips?

Not sure if you still have this prblm, but my baby was extremely gassy until I cut dairy from my diet (pediatrician's recommendation). Two days later, no more gas, burping issues, or spit up. It changed our lives!!

Thank you sooo much for that thread cathn! Lalouse it is still a problem. I feel it's gotten slightly better but he's been spitting up a lot more as well. My pediatrician recommended cutting out dairy as well and I have cut out my milk intake which was hard as I would drink milk everyday on top of cereal I would have. I didn't think a slice of cheese here or there or cream in my coffee would matter but maybe I need to cut ALL dairy out. Dd had tummy issues too but hers was trouble pooping.

For some babies it is necessary to cut all dairy (even the hidden stuff). I had to do it three times, was tough as I missed cheese the most (I don't like to drink milk really). My two youngest had constipation as a symptom of mpi.
