Title: Christmas craft for a 2 yo
Post by: lily_layne on November 21, 2014, 18:13:10 pm
I'd like to have R make something for her grandparents for Christmas but I have no idea what and I don't want to get lost on pinterest ;) Does anyone have an idea of a toddler-friendly craft that can be given as a gift?

Not something that can be given as a gift but last year we did white hand prints onto plain brown paper bags (with handles), lots of hands but all in one direction (palm at bottom of bag, fingers pointing to the top). After the paint dried I drew on little black dots for eyes nose, mouth buttons, and a red scarf. To make a snowy scene of snowmen (each finger is a man). He put the grandparent's gifts in those.

When L was two I bought some plain cheap wooden photo frames and a big bag of assorted buttons (both from amazon) and L stuck the buttons on the frames to decorate them. They looked really good actually and very simple. I then put a photo of L in each frame.  The GPs loved them :)

We left ours multicoloured but you could spray them silver/gold, or use something other than buttons to decorate with.

A tip: Loved ones have gotten amazing and touching and handmade stuff from dd over the years, and the only way *I* will ever get one is to make one with her for us to keep. Sop if you really like what you choose, make two!   ;)

Thanks for the ideas! I love the idea for a gift bag, creations. I think we might do a photo frame and a salt dough handprint - both sound simple enough for me to handle with a newborn around!

Oh, I just remembered another one I did with L.

Use salt dough and cookie cutters (stars, Xmas tree, sheep...) to make tree decorations. We painted them with gold or silver paint and they looked really good.

You can also make stained glass-style decorations and biscuits. So either salt dough or cookie dough cut into stars (or any Christmassy shape) with a smaller star shaped window. Then use either beads or boiled sweets that melt into the window as you cook it. They look great. You can make a hole in the salt dough ones to make it a Christmas tree decoration. Like this

Paper plate Christmas trees are also fun although maybe not a great gift

We are making these reindeer fingerprint baubles at our school Christmas Fayre

Look at you crafty ladies! I love the salt dough stained glass. R is really into play-dough right now so I know she'll love working with the salt dough. I think I'll make a lot and we can do a few different types of ornaments. Baby still hasn't arrived and I'm really feeling impatient about that this week so I think a salt-dough extravaganza with R is on the agenda for tomorrow am to keep my hands and mind busy! (Plus maybe if I have plans, baby will disrupt them by deciding to arrive ;))
