Title: Is cereal a must?
Post by: Martini~ on December 02, 2014, 20:37:39 pm
Hi Ladies, quick question. DS is currently being offered with his lunch at 11am but is not very hungry...
If has breakfast at 8am (60ml milk plus cereal 2tbsp plus 4tbsp fruits). At 7:15 he usually drinks around 7oz milk. In last days when he sometimes refused cereals he took very nice lunch. So I thought that maybe for now when his appetite is lower (teething...) I could cut this cereal and offer maybe only some fruits... WDYT?

I did BLW so never offered baby cereal to my LOs.  So from my POV the answer is no cereal is not a 'must'.  They did generally have bits of toast or similar to chew on if they wanted.

I don't remember cereals either TBH, but we were wheat free. I can't see that they are mandatory!

That's what I thought but just wanted to make sure that they can cope without:). In Poland there is no kid around who is not taking a full bowl of cereal at breakfast:).

My DS2 never liked cereal.  I tried different kinds and tried mixing his favorite fruits in, but it still didn't work.  I don't think it is a must either. :)

We never did cereal either.

The only reason the health nurse said to use cereal was as a vehicle for other foods - ie mixing in avocado, nut butters, fruit etc.  My oldest gagged on cereal (she still cannot stand the sight of oatmeal!) and the other two had it for their breakfast but heavily mixed with other goodies!

We didn't do cereal till DD could feed it to herself with a spoon, think it was over the age of 1
Now she loves oatmeal with fruit, but we never really did the mushy baby stuff. Also did BLW from 8mo

My DS didn't have cereal as a first food but from about 7 months he had baby/toddler muesli mixed with a small amount of milk and mixed thick, rolled into balls and eaten as finger food (BLW here too).

It's not a must but I don't think you have to totally cut it out either, if he eats a better lunch with a smaller breakfast maybe just reduce the amount? I know I wouldn't want mine to fill up on cereal and not get whatever I was offering for lunch if I was balancing food groups and variety across the day/week.
