Title: how to get 1.5yr old to eat ground meat?
Post by: mommytogabriel on February 06, 2015, 17:42:39 pm
hi everyone ;D ;D ;D

I was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to get my son to eat ground meat? He has a texture issue and up until 2 months ago a major gag issue where he would gag and throw up.

He does very well with chicken, he will chew and swallow normally.
But with the ground meat, it goes in his mouth and he takes his hand and throws it on the floor.

I suppose if it is something you eat regularly, you could keep offering it, but could you offer him meat in another form instead. If he'll eat chicken, will he eat beef as steak or a roast joint, or pork/lamb chops?

That way he's getting used to the flavours of other meats, and the nutrition from them, but without the texture issues.

thank you! I thought of the steak and pork loin, but i think for him they would be very hard for him to chew especially given his gagging/vomiting issues in the past..
unless there's a recipe that would make it very very soft?

A roast that you cook very very slowly should come out tender like chicken; also beef stew meat, also cooked slowly.

We offered stuff like steak & pork chop cut in strips so that even before they had molars they could suck and mouth it while fisting it. Still works when they are older, they just bite small pieces off.

My DS only really started eating ground meat about a year ago (age 3 maybe) and that was from a lot of exposure and allowing him to not eat it. It also helped to make meat balls rather than have the minced spread throughout a meal. If it was spread throughout it could quite easily put him off the entire meal, if it is separate and easily identifiable he will eat the rest of the meal and more likely to have a try on the meat ball.  Allowing what I consider to be more junky foods such as sausages and sausage rolls (the meat is so fine, so tasty, so fatty, so salty that he loves it, sigh) also helped in the end as i was able to say the meatball was a bit like a sausage. He ate a lot more when he made the meatballs himself and chose all the spices to mix in.

Like pps have said slow cooked meat is softer. Mine likes super soft lamb shank, pulled pork (shoulder) made in the slow cooker.  He rarely eats more than one or two mouthfuls of meat or chicken but will eat a huge portion of tender lamb or pork.

We had a beef stew tonight, I actually made it last week and half was frozen, it was so soft and tender tonight, E really enjoyed it. The longer it cooks the better.

you can shred the meat when it has been slow cooked. a lot of kids have issues with ground beef. my DD only recently started eating it. i wouldn't sweat it!

DD pretty much still won't eat beef....with the exception of the occasional meatloaf....which does have a different texture bc of the breadcrumbs and egg and such.  Melted cheese on top entices her.   And then of course the dipping pond of ketchup.   ;D

Good point about the ketchup, my kids have always loved ground beef but generally I serve it in spaghetti sauce or lasgna...loads of sauce & cheese!

Just jumping on this thread.  I made my somewhat fussy 2 and a bit year old beef burgers this weekend.  She loved the idea of eating burgers, but in reality it was ketchup in a bun because she pulled out the burgers and also did what the OP said and spat it out if she ate it.

She loves spag bol etc, and also meatballs, so I am thinking that maybe they are just too dry.  It would be easy for me to turn it into a pasta sauce but just wondering if you guys think it would be worth persevering with her to eat them as burgers and get her used to the texture.  Or if it is just something that she needs to grow into?

She does eat a lot of things - but they have to be prepared how she is used to and how she likes them usually!

of course the dipping pond of ketchup.

This helped my children eat Salmon last night SALMON! I think I'm just going to by stock in ketchup lol

ewww salmon! my DS loves using tamari or soy sauce

what about meatballs?

oh, and my DD just turned 3 and is not a much of a meat lover. i make her a lot of eggs and get protein in other ways. She will eat deli meat on a sandwich though and salami (if not spicy)

DS won't eat any meat but chicken and hot dogs, and he's 4.5yo!

Anything else, even regular sausage, gets refused or spat  :(

Fortunately he loves fish and eggs so we can just about cope  :P

Texture issues are really tough to deal with - hugs  :-*

Just want to add though, if your child won't eat beef, I wouldn't be concerned from a health standpoint. The more lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish) are better for them anyway. Protein and calcium are the 2 nutrients that parents get concerned about, but they are also the 2 that most kids who eat a decent diet get enough of.    :)

With respect, there is considerable debate on that front. :)

But Anne is right - you can get the protein from plenty of sources, as well as the calcium
