Title: When do they stop being so sensitive to foods?
Post by: 1stimer on February 07, 2015, 15:20:28 pm
I tried starting ds on rice cereal. He had been on the oatmeal bc ds doc said it's easier on their tummies. He will be 8m tomorrow and I've noticed the past 2 days he's been terribly grumpy with tummy issues. He poops several times a day and it's a normal texture, maybe a little thicker than normal but nothing hard. When does this get better. He's still bf as well so my diet is still limited which I've completely adjusted to but I'm still terrified to try anything new. I've tried gas drops and they don't seem to help much. I've had terrible luck with gripe water. Did anyone else have a lo with a sensitive tummy but ended up with a normal eater??

Maybe it's just the rice that doesn't agree with him?
Mine vomited after any rice trial so I just stopped giving him rice. He still doesn't eat rice at 4yo. He's tried a small taste now and again and he isn't sick but he clearly doesn't like it and he is not a fussy eater.
Perhaps you can move forwards with veggies, meat, fish instead?

rice cereal made my ds constipated. I stopped giving him rice cereal and when I reintroduce it could be only wholegrain rice. It seems better now, but until 4 when he ate rice he did not make poo for a couple of days.

With Josie we went thru several different cereals before we found one that didn't make her tummy hurt; I want to say we ended up with millet for her, and oatmeal for Natalie, but that's all so long ago now.

Maybe try foods that aren't cereal? Around this age we were starting to do bits of soft foods for the girls to pick up and (attempt to) feed themselves, if my bad eyes have read your Lilypie right. So things like soft cubes of carrot, bits of things we were eating. (And I didn't read it right - with my reading glasses NOW I can see the "adjusted age" so glad I looked again! LOL)

We skipped the cereals and went to sweet potatoes and squash (if I remember...long time ago) which seemed to work better.

We tried soft carrots and even a few small soft noodles today. He loved them and he seems to be fine with it. He's still constipated though. We'll yesterday he was and today he's had 2 semi hard poops. I'm hoping it works it's way out soon lol. With dd we had to put her on lactulose  stool softener so I may discuss that at his apt next month.

My DS was always constipated after carrots.  Actually he never got very constipated but his poos would be getting on the hard side after carrots and if I hadn't manipulated his diet he certainly would have become constipated.
For us prunes were the answer. If he had carrots he had prunes the same day. I also used both foods to balance up his poos on a kind of daily basis (the way mums are constantly checking out their kids poo!). If he was getting a bit too soft for whatever reason I steamed some carrots, if he was getting a bit on the firm side I handed him a prune - worked great for use.

Have you had a read of these?
Constipation and Laxative Foods
Laxative Foods
I think it was that second link which led me to discover that carrots were the culprit to causing DS to get a bit constipated.

I'm racking my brain to think of what might have started this cycle. The carrots were new today. He hasn't had any in several weeks, he doesn't really care for them but I guess he's had some mixed in with his mangos. I'm guessing the rice ceral? I know he needs to up his water intake but he's not a supply cup fan, he just wants to chew on it. If I do the straw in water and drop it into his mouth he takes it better.

Dried prunes were the answer for my ds's constipation too. If after 1-2 days without poos I gave him 2-3, he was going the same day...
I think that rice cereals started the cycle. It was sure for us that rice=constipation, at least until 3 yo.

Yeah I'll get some prunes. It's worked in the past. I just feel terrible that anything I give him makes his tummy upset

For liquids we got some plastic shot cups and put water in them and just let Natalie practice with them. She spilled more than she drank, but she got there. We also found some plastic cups with integrated straws that Natalie took to for liquids; the downside was that once she worked out that she could get an entire feed in 30 seconds that way she quit nursing cold turkey. LOL

These are the cups we found: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31Y-VyrVDfL.jpg

And yes, prunes did it pretty much every time we needed them to; I got good at stewing and pureeing them, and the juice can be diluted and/or mixed with other foods, even cereal.

Those straw cups are cool :)
Does he take a bottle at all? In the very early days of solids I gave DS a bottle with water in at solids meals, he had a sippy cup too but it took him a while to really get a proper drink from one and I wanted to make sure he got as much water as he needed so for us the bottle helped.

I always used the ready to eat prunes (nice and soft) but tried canned prunes once or twice too - wow they are powerful! I really can't give them to DS because just 1 or 2 and he's got the runs.

He does take the bottle but I hadn't even thought to give him water in it...jeeze...I guess I needed another set of eyes so thank you lol!! I put some white grape juice with water in his cup (that's all the juice I had) and he's been on a sweet potato and prune/apple mix diet for dinner last night and then for all his meals today. His poop seems a little better and he slept better last night. Maybe I was just mixing it up too much. He really has liked his meals the past day and a half so we will see how tomorrow goes!

And those cups are cool! Probably gonna order some!
