Title: 7mo routine tweak needed to fit in with school run!
Post by: CoraDora on April 24, 2015, 23:06:46 pm
Our current routine is something like this:

Wu 6:30/7
E
A
S 9:15 - 10:15
A (I wake him after an hour so that I can fit in a second nap before the school run)
E
A
S 12:30/13:00 (this is where it's been going a bit wonky)
A 14:00/14:30
E
A
S 16:30 15 min cn
E
A
E and bt 18:30

The issues we're having are that the second nap often needs extending (which doesn't always work so he ends up having a short nap), that he sometimes resists the cn, and that he has been having lots of nw.

I have to leave the house at 14:55 to collect my eldest from school.

Does anyone have any pointers??

Tia!

He is likely ready to drop the CN which often happens around 6 months
All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months
Of course depending on family circumstances etc sometimes it sometimes help to have 3 naps for long with perhaps one long and two CNs, if you need to fit around certain things like the school run.

My suggestion would be to work towards 2 naps.  Roughly 3hr A time so something like
WU 7
A 3hr
S 10 - 12
A 3hr
S 3 - 4.30/5.00
A 2.5/3hr
BT 7pm/7.30pm
But this depends on how you do the school run and it you are happy for LO to fall to sleep during the run. For example if you walk with a stroller and set off at the right time will he fall to sleep in the stroller for the trip to school and back and can you let him continue to sleep there after you return home?  or equally in a car seat. I know mine would fall to sleep in moments if I had the right A time and set off at the right time for him.

If this doesn't work for you then we could think of some other ideas.

If it is not possible for him to sleep outside of the house let us know the time you get home from school pick up too, it could be there is time for a CN then for instance.  It could also be that, if given a full nap rather than a capped nap, he can manage a slightly longer A time which may make a difference.

What do you think?

Thank you for taking the time to reply - I really appreciate it.

The problem is I have two other little ones who I need to work around.

Yesterday he did:
Wu 6:00
A
S 9-10:30
Ai
S 13:00-14:30
A
S 18:15

and he's had a much more settled night so far (it's 22:30). I'm not going to df him either as I think it unsettles him a little.

We live very close to school so can be back home for naps, plus he won't sleep very long in the pushchair (I don't think).

The long first nap isn't ideal as it means I can't really go anywhere but it shouldn't be too long till we're shortening that nap anyway?

Well, that routine looks good :) Likely he is better rested having the two longer naps rather than the capped CNs so can cope better with the longer A to BT without getting OT before bed.
I would continue with it if you feel it's working (bit early to tell yet).
The things to watch out for are morning WU getting earlier and earlier if the first nap comes too soon, or NW due to OT if that A time to BT is too long (even with good naps a long A to bed can effect the night).

For many LOs once they are established on two decent naps the time they go off track as the early stages of the 2-1 begin to show is usually around 10/11  months when one nap would be shortened.  It isn't always the first nap which is capped though. It depends really if this suits LO and the family. It looks like just now you prefer the morning nap to become the shorter nap but some LO don't settle into this.

Last night he was very unsettled but I think that's more to do with a cold than anything else.

I should be waking him at 6ish, shouldn't I?

If you want to keep with that routine then yes I would suggest waking at 6am otherwise it may become hard to get him down for that 9am nap or for him to sleep a decent length, which you need.
If you don't mind the earlier WU time you could even bring BT a little earlier, this could really help with night sleep, his last A is very long, I'd be concerned about it causing some problem - but if it works it works!

The other option, perhaps not now but later, is to let him WU later, move the first nap later and the second nap to after school pick up, shifting BT later (and round again to morning WU being later).
