Title: How many NW are appropriate
Post by: Vee119 on June 12, 2015, 16:55:25 pm
My DD is on a 3-hr EASY and we are both happy with how things are going.  She goes to bed between 7 and 7:30 and typically wakes up every 3-hrs for a feed (10, 1, 4). I'm just curious if this is normal or if or when she should be able to drop one of those feeds.  I'm worried that she is beginning to wake habitually and not necessarily out of hunger - she doesn't eat much during her last NF around 4am.  Is there something I could/should be doing to help her sleep for longer stretches between feeds?  I tried DF but that seems to interrupt her sleep more so I dropped it.  She is ebf.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry you didn't get any replies yet.
I don't have experience of BF and NWs but this post will give your thread a bump.  I'm sure you'll have some support soon x

3 feeds could be completely normal but things to consider would be, is she having full feeds each time or is it just a few sucks to get back to sleep? How does she go to sleep in the day? Does she feed to sleep or have other props that would cause her to look for you every time she wakes?

Have you tried resettling her without a feed, with shush pat for example?

Thanks for the response!
I paid especially close attention to our feeds yesterday and I believe she is taking full feeds at 10 and 1.  What I did notice was that the first feed of the day -7am- is not a full feed.  I guess she is taking in so much at night that it's short-changing the daytime feed.

During the day she goes off to sleep by herself without any intervention from me - I just put her in her crib and off she goes. I will try tonight to resettle at least one of the wakings....the 1am???

If she's taking a full feed at 1 she might not want to resettle without that feed. You could try for 5 mins perhaps and then feed if she still isn't resettling.

So is she not taking a full feed at 4? If so then maybe try to resettle without feeding then.

Just an update.

After two nights of trying to resettle without feeds, we are down to just 1 NW!!  Hopefully it sticks until at least the four month regression!

Thanks again for your help.

That's great, well done!

She may well need more feeds during growth spurts and such so don't be disheartened if she does wake for a couple of feeds anytime.
