Title: do I pick him up? he's playing happily.

My 5.5 mth lo woke up happily from his nap ( 1.5hrs)  and playing happily by himself for 45 minutes.
Is it too long to leave him alone by himself? I wonder if I'm neglecting him.

It's not yet feeding time.

when would you pick yr lo up  after his/her nap?  ( if he/she was playing happily alone in the cot, had slept enough, and was not yet feeding time)

I think for now I'd leave him to it if it's not time to eat, but do keep an ear open and go in if/when he begins to sound distressed or when it IS time to eat. :)

If I was doing something I'd probably leave him until I was free (if happy), but I'd usually just go fetch him. No real reason - just that he might as well come and 'chat' to me instead  :). It isn't neglectful to leave a happy baby in their crib but generally I just quite like having him with me. I just let him play until he asks for his feed.

Same here.

Does he like books? Mine loved being read to and looking at books so we could easily fill up time cuddling and reading if a feed wasn't yet due.

Agree with Liz. 

If he's happy, he's happy, there's no second guessing that! And it's great that he will entertain himself if you're doing something.  It's lovely to play together too! :)  Often at that age my LOs would lie down and watch me hang or fold washing and be very entertained by the different colours and shapes of fabric.
