Title: Waking at the same time each night
Post by: Aria2010 on January 08, 2016, 02:01:59 am
My son is 5 months old and breastfed. I have him on the 4 hour EASY. He used to wake generally once a night for a feed. He'd wake at different times anywhere between 1am and 3.30am. If he woke earlier he's usually wake again for a second feed around 5.30 - 6.00am but mostly he woke a bit later and just slept until morning. Recently he's been waking up at 1.30am exactly every night. This now means he usually wakes for a second feed. I'm not sure what's changed and why he's waking up at the exact same time each night? I'm wondering if it's become a habit rather than hunger? For example, tonight I tried putting his crib flat after having it on an incline since he was a newborn. It obviously didn't suit him and he was waking up a lot after I put him down. About one and half hours after I put him down he really woke up and was crying - I comforted him as much as possible but in the end gave have him a little feed just to calm him and he fed for about 7 minute and then went to sleep. I was expecting him to wake later for his feed because of this 'extra' little feed but he's woken up bang on 1.30am again. I tried to get him back to sleep but he wasn't having it so I've fed him. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ps. I follow the baby whisperer routine generally but don't dreamfeed so I don't expect him to go all night without a feed. Just want to establish why he's waking at the same time each night now?

It's possible it's becoming habitual, especially if the precise night waking time has been going on for quite a while.  Personally, my boys were always very 'punctual' on their NW's, until they just suddenly stopped and STTN.  Is 7 mins the norm, or is that a fast feed for him? (based on the day time feeds)

Thanks for the reply. 7 minutes is a short feed as he usually feeds for about 12 - 15 mins. I just thought having had that bit extra that he doesn't usually have that he'd sleep a bit longer? This 1.30am time has been for about 10 days. Not sure if it has anything to do with it but he did have a bit of a cold but he's over it now and still waking at 1.30am.

Hmmm, I'd probably give it a while longer, particularly if he was sick.  It takes an adult 7-10 to recover from a cold so assume it will take a smidge longer for your LO to feel 100%.  If he needs that extra bit of feed, go for it.
