Title: Routine tweak for nearly 1-year old (emw!)
Post by: Vicks735 on January 28, 2016, 10:26:51 am
I'm hoping you can suggest a routine tweak to help in our transition from 2:1 naps to help get rid of emw!

The last few days have looked like this:
Sunday
Wake 515 (not properly up until 630)
Nap 945-1015
Nap 145-345
Bed 740

Monday
Wake 630
Nap 10-1030
Nap 2-320
Bed 745

Tuesday
Wake 615
Nap 945-1015
Nap 150-335
Bed 735

Wednesday
Wake 508 (not up until 630)
Nap 940-1010
Nap 2-345
Bed 745

While my son goes down pretty easily for his first nap he is by no means desperate for sleep. The same with his second nap - he's extremely jolly when I put him down and will often talk to himself for 5 mins or so. We used to get a consistent 2hr second nap but now it does seem to be shortening. There's probably a bit of teething going on and developmental stuff too as my son loves to walk holding my hands and has just started to climb on things.

I'd like to start to move towards 1 nap but not sure how to do this? Any advice would be great.

Since your afternoon nap is the main long nap the idea woud be to shorten the morning nap while bringing the afternoon nap earlier (so eventually the 2nd nap will be early enough to drop the first nap). Alternatively you can jump cold turkey but that does not always work for every lo (I did this with all my kids once they could handle about 4/4.5 hrs of A time).

Thanks for coming back to me. I've increased the morning awake time to 4hrs and for the last 4 mornings have had no early wake-ups. The first nap is now around 1030ish (my son is waking around 630) and the second nap around 230.

From your message it sounds like I need to look to reduce the first nap to say 20 mins but should I also look to push this further out until about 12? Once my son can cope with being up this long we can then go with one nap.

I would keep the morning nap where it is for now and bring the afternoon one earlier as you shorten the morning nap.  Having the catnap too late would push the afternoon nap later and bedtime. The idea of the catnap is just to tide them over until the longer nap so it can be a bit of an ut nap (fine line though as they have to tired enough to go down for it ;) ).
