Title: 3.5 year old waking up inconsolable after naps
Post by: carolina_bug on January 31, 2016, 21:54:02 pm
Hi.  My 3.5 DS have starting screaming when he wakes up from his naps.  He is inconsolable for about 5-10 min.  He can't speak, he just screams.  After, he can't tell me what he was so upset about.  It doesn't happen at night, only for naps.  He still needs his nap (about 45-60 min) or he's super cranky in the afternoon/evening.

Has anyone experienced this?

Yes me! My 2.5 yo wakes up crying hard from every nap. I am right there to get her but it does not matter. Sometimes it take 10 min of cuddles before she calms down. I have no advice but hope someone else does!

I guess it's just the 2 of us.

My DS did this exactly! So so frustrating and hard, but I don't think there's much to do but ride it out. Could be a part of the 1-0 transition?

My DS was the same too. Do you wake him up?

DS did it for about 3/4 months often every day, until he then dropped the nap totally. I used to tell him that mum is here if he needs me but i would leave him to come round and wake up, and leave him to bring himself round. There was nothing i could do for him and i found that allowing him that time without me interfering (and making him worse sometimes by fussing round him) would really ease the situation. Obviously if he wanted me he knew to shout me and i would be straight there x

This is what worked best for us too. I would calmly repeat "Mommy is here to help you when you are ready." There were times that it took an hour!! But eventually it stopped.

Hugs to you,
I will move your post to "Sleeping for Toddlers" as you will probably get more help over there from mammas with similar aged LOs.

My ds 3.5 does this if I wake him. He has always hated being woken up from naps. I just hug him and usually try and distract with tv until he calms down. I think hes juat so disoriented when I wake himin the middle of a sleep cycle etc but I have to to cap his nap.
