Title: Quick question! 10 week old bedtime routine
Post by: Tammyj on April 19, 2016, 22:14:33 pm
Hey all, hoping for clarification and guidance.  Struggling with evening routine.  Sometimes I luck out and she eats, goes to bed by 8, and DF at 11.  Most of the time I struggle with her fighting sleep around 8, and it continues to 9/9:30 or beyond.

Routine -
EAS every 3 hours starting at 7am.

Come 4pm, try to get her to wake on her own as we need to pick up sister.  I do a quick feed (she's miserable when she's tired and only does 1 letdown on each side.
She's awake or slightly dozing until we get back around 5.  Try to keep her awake a few minutes more and maybe feed some more (usually 1 more letdown), then off to nap in the swing.
She wakes before 6pm usually and I struggle with getting her to stay up until 7 when I'd like to give her a bath. (I am not sure if I should move bedtime up as that messes with DF?)
I feed her when she wakes and keep her awake until as close to 7 as possible and then bath, feed and bed.

Ideally she's sleeping by 8 and DF at 10:30/11pm

What is the best way to handle the nighttime routine to have an 8pm sleep time? Ideas please?

It sounds like she just needs her evening routine pushed a little earlier.  I think if she is fighting sleep from 8pm -9/9:30 it is just a case of OT and BT probably needs to move to 7pm (or even earlier if needed).    After she wakes from her 5ish nap in the swing I'd move right to bath and bedtime routine from there.  My DD is just over 4 months and we do her bath at 6 and she's usually down for the night at 6:45/7pm.  Then you can decide if you maybe want to move her DF up a bit 10/10:30 or leave it.

Thanks Lindsay for the quick reply!! Moving it up makes sense and I'd rather do the DF earlier as 11 is too late for me as it is. One more question: tonight she napped until 6:20, so I was able to stick to the schedule.  What if tomorrow reverts back to waking from last nap before 6pm? Does the switching back and forth mess with their rhythms?

Thank you. ☺️

I don't think it should mess anything up too much.  I think at this stage you are more just trying to keep the EAS pattern (though that can get wonky in the evenings) vs watching the clock.  The idea is just to have a predictable series of events, so nap in the swing, A time (bath etc), feed, sleep and watching for cues so she doesn't venture into OT territory.  I think as she gets a bit older she'll fall into more of the same routine each night and it won't bounce around as much.  She's still teeny so it takes a while before it all settles and becomes regular each evening.

I agree to move bedtime earlier. Definitely sounds like overtired...
