Title: Allergy to beans
Post by: sarahg983 on April 21, 2016, 21:24:06 pm
We have discovered that my 1 year old has an allergy to baked beans of all things! When he eats them his lips swell, he vomits and seems in pain and his eczema flares. Has anyone experienced any similar allergy? Are there other things he is likely to be allergic to as he has eczema and itchiness that flares up and down all the time :(

Hi and welcome to BW! (((Hugs))) allergies suck but they are manageable once you get used to always checking ingredients. Have you been to see an allergist? Since he seems to have more than one body system involved (ie swelling & vomitting) I would want an epi pen on hand in case of anaphylactic reactions (prior reactions cannot predict future ones so know way to know if they will be more serious in future).

Our allergist will only test for foods that have been ingested and had a known reaction so a food diary is probably a good starting point. Allergy tests are not as reliable under age 2 I think and can have false positives so sometimes the only way to know for sure is to see a reaction.

Oh one thought - could it be something in the sauce not the beans themselves??

Hello and welcome  ;)  I agree with Heidi that I would definaltely seek medical advice as that does sound like a proper allergy to something.

Beans is not something that I have heard to before but y can be allergic to anything  :P tomato is a common irritant - has your LO had tomato before? Has he had other kind of beans before?

Possibly paprika in the sauce?
If it turned out to be paprika rather than the beans themselves you could make your own version of baked beans without the paprika. You'd need to check any and all pre-packed foods for ingredients, things like fish fingers and all sorts of packaged foods often have paprika in them but if you home cook from fresh produce it would be a simple thing to avoid.

Wow! My son is allergic to baked beans and this is the first time I've heard of someone with this allergy!! The strange thing is I found a photo of him recently at probably age 18 months tucking into a plate of beans on toast  :o Shortly after that he became allergic, he vomits and comes up in hives, his eyes swell too. Its not nice  :( He's almost 11 now and still allergic, he cant eat food that has been touched by baked beans or even the sauce they come in.  For a while I thought it was the sauce but I rang Heinz as he eats their spaghetti hoops without a problem and they told me the recipe for the sauce for the hoops and the baked beans is exactly the same. We have also tried him with red kidney beans and his reaction was the same.
