Title: 14 wo, dropped night feed
Post by: Sunnyday01 on May 04, 2016, 13:34:30 pm
Hi

My little one is 14 wo ands we do a dream feed at 10.30 and on a 3 hour easy routine. He has 7oz bottles at every feed and pretty much takes all of it. He wakes up in the night between 2.30 and 3.30 - I was feedinghim here and he was taking it but I'm not sure if he was actually hungry and just taking it. I was on 6oz to a week or so ago and upped it to 7 to see if it made a difference at night - it hasn't.

The last few nights I have tried to settle him with his dummy before offering a feed, and every time he has settled ok. He tends to  wake at 5 and takes time to resettle but can iften get another 40 minutes out of him. When he dies eventually wake up he's not crying or giving signs if hunger. Do you think I should continue with this, obviously if he won't settke or gives signs if hunger I would feed him.

If it's working, i'd say continue. Are you feeding at 5am? I imagine he's waking due to hunger at this point if his last feed was at 10:30. 5am is a common NW feed at this age.

Hi! Thought I'd chime in if that's ok ;)

Ginger is right! One night feed, and probably by 5am- would be hunger. Try a feed and baby will prb settle faster :) ...

Either way, there might be a growth spurt coming about. At 3 months I believe and possibly that dreaded 4 mth regression so expect things to most likely change a bit! However, your one of the awesome lucky few with a baby who sleeps all night! ;D enjoy!!

I tried feeding last night when he woke at 3.30 - only a top up though rather than a full feed and he woke up at 4.50 again so couldn't have been hungry just an hour or so later?

I can't do wake to sleep though as he only went back down at 3.50 so at the time is need to do wake to sleep!

I know I'm lucky that he sleeps most of the night but those last few hours of the night are hard going!

I wouldn't feed at all if he is coping like that - but that's my personal opinion. Mine was also only on DF at that age (from 12 weeks I guess when I switched 1x NW to 1xDF) and sleeping through till 6 or 7am. 5/6am wakeups are common at that age - and in our case feeding didn't help at all, even make things worse, feeding at 5 meant he wanted to start a day at 5...:/. I guess it is just their age, they start to wake after 10h of sleep and should coo in the crib and if everything is fine, they can go back to sleep after that for another 1-2 sleep cycles.

So are you saying martini, that you would just feed at bt, Dr and 3.30 or drop the 3.30 as well?

At 3mo, I was feedinf just DF at 11pm and he slept till 7am. He was having 1 feed per night from about 6 weeks, but around 12 weeks this feed was around 4-5am and I got a massive problem to settle him after that feed. So I decided to start doing the dream feed at 12 weeks LOL and stopped feeding at 5am. He still was waking around 5:40 and needed some resettle but it was much easier to settle him as I didn't have to take him out of a crib - usually I just turned on white noise and he was resettling himself til 6:30/7:00.

So in your case I am just sayind it's possible that he needs only one feed per night (either DF or NF). If he can resettle with a dummy at 3:30 and goes back to sleep for next 2-3h I would probably go with it. If you see he needs more or resettling without a feed is difficult, just add additional feed.

What Marti said! If he can settle without feed, go for it. If not, try the second feed.

I'm curious why he wakes at 5... It is during light sleep and it is typical but maybe check room temp? I toucj the back of DS below neckline with my wrist. A bit awkward but my hands are always cold. It may pass sooner than you expect if it is developmental. Notice anything new during the day?
