Title: Help with 17mo 2 to 1 transition is crazy!
Post by: Sarah luvs Harry on July 08, 2016, 00:01:54 am
DD is 17 months old; we JUST quit BF like last week so I imagine she is still mad at me for it.  :-[

Wake time is 7:30am
We used to BF after she got up but quit that when she started biting. Hard. Last week.
BFast 8:15am
Snack: 10:30am
Nap: 11:am [only 45mins (this is her norm)]
Lunch 12:30pm
Snack: 3pm
Nap 3:30pm [45 mins]
Then when she gets up from this nap she is always super cranky
Dinner 5:30pm
[We used to nurse before bed]
BT 7:30pm
And then she is MAD in her bed, sitting up, screaming, yelling, throwing her toys until 8:15pm, sometimes later.

Help, I can't take her madness anymore, she used to be such a happy, cheerful baby but now she's Babyzilla!

Have you read the 2-1 link? From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)
At 17 mo she is definitely ready to try for 1 longer nap.

That first A time is v short for her age & a 45min nap is usually a sign of UT. I'd try increasing the time to her first nap until you get a good long nap. I'm guessing that at her age and with a 7.30wu time that will start somewhere between 12 & 1 so you might need to make the morning snack smaller & do lunch earlier.

How sensitive is she to being tired? If v sensitive, increase the first A time by 15mins every couple of days. If she handles OT reasonably well you could jump in half hour increments.

Depending on length of the nap you may need to do a v short CN late afternoon or maybe pull bedtime earlier...or at her age she may just manage to go straight to one nap cold turkey! It's a bit of trial and error.

Let us know how you get on
Xx

Thanks for your advice Scottishmummy. Followed your suggestions and have moved nap later - to 12:30pm but often times she falls asleep at 11:45am when in the car on the way to pick up big brother but once home, she will sleep until 1ish.
For a few days there, we've tried without the late afternoon cat nap but have found that she really needs the 4:10pm 20min snooze otherwise she's a real disaster when bedtime comes. With the late cat nap, bed time is 8pm and she goes to bed like a lightbulb. Without the late cat nap, I tried to make bedtime 6:30pm and she could fall asleep and then wake up and scream and scream until someone came for her.
On better days, she would nap at 12:15pmish but then get up an hour later. How do I get her to make her nap longer so she can make it the rest of the day?

The 1hr/1hr15min naps sound UT and a later nap (longer A time) might get a longer nap...but I understand that's not possible when you have another one to pick up & LOs will often fall asleep earlier in the car than they would if just at home.,so you get the UT nap.

Honestly- with the pick up and falling asleep in the car, I Don't think there's much you can do & you're right, in those days she'll need the CN to get to BT.  It sounds like she's not ready to drop the 20 min CN yet so I'd keep it until she either won't fall asleep for it, or won't go to bed at her usual time.

Could you try pushing the nap later still on days you don't have the pick up and see if you get a longer one?
If not, you've tried it and she might just not be ready for the longer A time and one nap yet, so I'd keep going with the 2 naps until she is. My DS was 18 or 19 mo before he dropped the CN and went to one nap consistently,
