Title: Swaddle Transition..help!
Post by: StacyAnn on March 19, 2017, 14:42:21 pm
I just started the 3 hour EASY routine with my 14wo this past week. We transitioned her from a pack and play in our room to her crib in her room when we started the new routine. So far, she has been doing great..she does wake up around 3-4 am still and we shush/pat her back to sleep which takes about an hour or so. In order for her to settle to sleep we swaddle her ..however she now rolls from back to front in her swaddle..she can lift her head up very well on her own and turn her head to the side but it still worries me. I know I need to stop swaddling her but when I have tried her arms just go crazy and it's hard to calm her down to sleep. She moves SO much! I bought the merlins magic sleepsuit as a swaddle transitioner but she is too small for it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can transition her? How long do you think it will take?! I'm afraid it will disrupt her new routine we just started implementing this last week! Help!

Have you seen this? Weaning the swaddle - when, how, tips and tricks  In general when you need to wean from a safety perspective, it's a case of just pushing through for a few days of disturbed sleep and then usually things settle down x

So far the swaddle transition has been going better than expected. A friend of mine told me to wash and dry the Merlin Magic Sleepsuit since it shrinks so I did that and put her in it for her naps and at bedtime. She goes to sleep around 8:15 and I do a dream feed about 10:15...wake up time is 7am. She is still waking up consistently around 4AM (she did the same when she was swaddled). The crying usually is on and off for close to an hour and she usually puts herself back to sleep..I do go in and do the shush/pat and that works most of the time... any tips on why she consistently wakes up at the same time? Do you think I should try the wake to sleep method and see if that would work???? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks 😁

Do you feed her when she wakes at 4am?  I'd expect a baby of this age to still need a night feed in addition to the dreamfeed....

No, I just go in and shush her and give her the pacifier and she usually goes right back to sleep. She doesn't need a paci to fall asleep during nap times/bed time but at times when she is having a hard time falling back to sleep and I can tell she is very tired I give her the paci and she usually falls right back asleep. She then wakes around 6:30-7 which is when I feed her again. She started to sleep through the night this past week and slept until 7 am with no wake ups during the night (besides the dream feed). However, the past two days she has been waking up at 1:30 am and is inconsolable which makes me think she is hungry..this is the second night of this and I have fed her both times. Besides the 1:30 am wake time/feed these past couple days, she wakes up at 7 am. I am not sure if she is going through a growth spurt or not..do I just wait and see how long she continues to do the 1:30 am wake up to see if it's a growth spurt or not?

Also, just as an update...after play time when I go to put her down for a nap or down for bedtime, she goes right to sleep within 5 minutes. It is truly amazing how fast she caught on to her new routine and I am so thankful it has been going so well.

At her age I would definitely tend to feed if it has been anywhere like 3h since the last feed.  It's amazing she's done some full nights sometimes, but at this point I would expect that to be the exception, not the norm for most babies so don't feel like feeding at night is 'going backwards ' :)

Oh ok, good to know! She is now on the 4 hour EASY schedule so I will see if she wakes up more often at night to feed since she is only eating at 7/11/3/7 and a dream feed. She will be 4 months old in about a week and is about 12-13 lbs so I worry about her getting enough to eat.

As for her sleeping, the Merlin magic sleepsuit is still working out very well! She goes down for naps and bedtime in about 5 minutes and is able to put herself back to sleep when she startles herself the  majority of the time.
