Title: am vs. pm naps
Post by: professormom on March 24, 2017, 19:22:00 pm
I have almost 9 week old twins. We have been on the EASY for about 2 weeks and are making slow progress with napping. Both sleep great at night for 11-12 hours with 1 or 2 feeds. I find that their AM naps are always short (30 min. or so) and then in the afternoon we get a long one and another medium length one. Are they just exhausted by the afternoon because of the short morning naps? Or should I be extending wake time in the morning as maybe they are not at tired because they sleep well at night?

Hi! Congrats on the baby twins!!

They are very little still so keep in mind that sleep will be a bit off and on especially for the first few weeks. Nothing will really be consistent for a bit so many hugs and hang in there! You're doing great! :)

And yes, your situation seems very common! It happened with my LOs where we had 1 good nap during the day and the rest were short. It could be in part to A times but also just developmental as well. The way I tried to see it was:

0-3 mths they work on their night sleep.
3-6 mths they work on their day sleep.

There will be many changes but as long as the "routine" or eat play sleep stays consistent-- you will be at ease in the future! :) babies thrive off routine!

Remember at this age too, OT is inevitable! What I did was do my best to get as much sleep as possible at that age and tweak ATs or always keep them in mind :)

Is the morning nap something you want longer?

Hope this helps!

Hi and thank you so much for the positive and helpful response. I think right now we are also in a developmental Leap (we also follow the Wonder Weeks) which I know also impacts sleep a lot. Thinking back to the first few months with my daughter who is now 2.5 years old, I remember naps being all over the place and her schedule being a bit of a challenge. With two, my husband and I have been eager to get a routine in place, but as you point out we also need to remember to be flexible.

Yes it is the morning naps that appear to be the issue at this point. Today I napped one of my sons in a wrap to make sure he got a little longer of a morning nap. Thinking we might do that for one nap in the morning until they lengthen. Do you see any issue with that long term? Any other ideas I should be thinking about right now?

I think it's important to take a step back & say "this is working therefore I will do it" rather than look at something & think "will it be a problem later. Sadly we live in a society that is increasingly thinking that parents need to "get it right" or we are failing. IMHO if wrapping a baby makes them sleep longer you do it - when I had my boys, wrapping was encouraged until at least 6mo, unless the baby was fighting to get out of it & that was disrupting sleep.

DS2 is 12,5 weeks know. Morning nap and the last nap of the day (4th and now 3rd) were always a challenge. The same with DS1. But being honest I learnt that it's not an issue but an advantage for me. Looking back to DS1 his nap1 was good only after short nights or crappy mornings.

With DS2 right now we are having 30min morning nap but almost 2.5h lunchtime nap. I love it and much more prefer than two 1.5h sleeps when I cannot do anything I prefer long noon one and shorter on both sides of the day. So really don't bother but observe. If they act fine and are happy with that routine I would be more than happy to keep going with it. It's still a routine! But just not textbook lol (it also depends on which book you rely on).
