Title: 6 month old 5+ night awakenings
Post by: Pearceuccs on March 28, 2017, 18:41:11 pm
He wasn't napping or sleep well at night and I've increased his awake times as per another post in the nap section and his naps have gotten longer. I also moved him to two naps recently.

7 awake & BF (his goal is 7 but he wakes early a lot)
830 BF
1000 sleep (usually 1 hour yesterday was 1.5)
1130 awake & bf
100 BF
230 sleep - 345
345 awake & bf
7 bf & bedtime
1000 dreamfeed

Multiple night awakenings every two hours or shorter in duration

I'm having the exact same problem with my 7mth old. Could it be teething for your baby? Have you tried paracetamol? Paracetamol does nothing for us, but it may help rule out pain for your LO.

He just got his 5th tooth about 7 days ago and I think he's feeling better but sleep has not approved. He's always been a bad sleeper.

Ugh. I hope someone pops n with help soon. I'm with you. I'm so tired. Does your LO use a paci or fed to sleep?

No paci and he goes to sleep on his own with some patting and I try to use the pupd technique as to teach him to be more independent and don't pat him all the way to sleep. Where I think we go wrong is rocking him back to sleep in the middle of the night. I was hoping that more independent nap sleeping and fixing awake times would fix the night awakenings but no luck. I wanted to see if I needed to change anything else before we fully sleep train with Pupd.

I'm trying to get rid of the catnap which is possible most days this week but his naps are right around 1 hour still so daytime sleep is Barely over 2 hours only and sometimes a catnap is necessary for a bedtime that's not ridiculously early. So I'm hoping that with continued 2 nap schedule that he will start to increase the amount of daytime sleep closer to 3 hours. A catnap makes his last two awake times 2 hours instead of 3 hours.

Hi there... Thanks so much malibu_nikkus, for supporting Pear and offering suggestions.  That's actually how the forum was designed... for members to support one another. Thanks again!

Pearceuccs- It's really weird but I've read and people have said that nap and night sleep are compartmentalized differently in the brain. Sometimes babies transfer their IS skills to the night from nap and vice versa, but sometimes it is two totally different tasks and approaches. So it seems like your DS still needs guidance to IS for the night.

Have you also ruled out the 6mo growth spurt? It lasts a few days, so if that window has passed then it could be due to the sleep prop..  It usually takes about 2 weeks for baby to get to full independent sleep. How long has it been since you started using techniques? I'd like to know what DS is doing when he wakes... does he cry, chat, play, etc... and how long does it take for him to go back to sleep? And finally, what times is he waking each night? Random times with crying indicate hunger, etc...

I would always wait about a minute or 2 before going in to help him go back to sleep in the middle of the night UNLESS he is crying hard.

WRT to the routine, what time is BT when you do 2 naps?

I have ruled it out because he's been doing this pattern pretty much his whole life. And last couple of nights he's woken up every hour. He cries when he wakes up. You go in there right away and pick him up and he immediately stops and he falls asleep quick again. I hold him for like 3 minutes and put him back. Then repeat. Around 4 am he does cry longer sometimes and last night took an 1.5 hours for him to go to sleep. He was really awake crying on off with me trying to rock him and pat him in his crib. Even holding he wouldn't  close his eyes. I finally fed after 50 min of struggles then he still took a bit to go to sleep. I try not to feed at this time because he doesn't ever eat that good and then doesn't eat good when waking up either. Bedtime is 6-715 depends on naps.

Are food allergies a possibility? My DS was waking hourly.  I know some of his allergies and also know that frequent waking can benfrom allergies.  As a trial i gave him an antihistamine last night. He slept much better. The doctor prescribed it a few month ago to help his congestion from gluten untilnI got it out ofbmy system . Just something to think about.

My son had GERD and was a poor sleeper. Liked being held bc laying down aggravated his esophagus. Fed often bc milk soothed his throat going down, but then aggravated his tummy. Lots of gas. Found relief with reflux medicine.

Waking hourly or often his whole life sounds like something medical. Have drs ever said anything or to test anything? We did a test of DS stool to detect blood, an indicator of allergies.

We did controlled comforting and after 2 days sleeps through the night. He only cried 5 times through the process. It wasn't medical. He just needed to learn to self soothe.

That's great. I hope "controlled comforting" means you were always present with him?

Did you alter his routine?

Controlled comforting is another name for controlled crying Ginger. It's worth mentioning to a poster that we do not support this method here on the forum but i guess it's over. If you would need any help in future however re sleep training we are happy hero help supporting you for more gentle methods.
