Title: Shorter time Between feedings
Post by: Jill1981 on May 19, 2017, 15:59:48 pm
We've really had a rough first 3 months. My baby has had issues with reflux and it has been impossible to put her down. She has always eaten every hour. We just had her tongue tie and lip tie revised a week ago. She's doing much better and has gone to feeding every hour and a half. She's just over 3 months. Is it going to be possible to do this with her feeding so often, or should I wait until she goes to 2 or 3 hours between feedings? What we have been doing is eat, play, eat, sleep. Of course she's nursing to sleep, and I usually hold her. Sometimes I can transfer her with the boppy pillow to the couch and let her sleep while I fold laundry. Also, we have mostly been co sleeping at night and for some naps,  since we weren't getting any sleep any other way. I appreciate any suggestions.

Hi there and welcome to BW forums.

It is possible to start routines and gentle sleep training at any time.
You can certainly begin to wean the feeding to sleep prop right away and then begin to sleep train in the cot regardless of how frequently your LO is feeding.
It really depends on what you are ready to begin working on/towards.

After reading more in the book, I think I have been miss reading her cues all this time. I think she has been tired and I've been feeding her instead of putting her to sleep. How frustrating. I wish I had read this book before I had the baby. Oh well, we are already doing better. She's not napping independently yet, but I'm going to work on it. A lot of the time I put her in the Tula or wrap and wear her for naps. But she's got to learn to go to sleep on her own.

I'm guessing your breast feeding, is that right? Breastfed babies often feed a lot more often than formula fed babies. This is especially true if she has been having trouble with transfer of milk due to ties. The BF advice in the book is quite outdated and it is now known it is normal for many EBF babies to feed more frequently than 3hrly. By all means if you think she isn't actually hungry but tired then you can try to settle her without a feed but if she is protesting she may well really need that feed.

I also wanted to mention that it's very dangerous and not recommended to let a baby sleep on the couch. I know you probably think you are there watching her so it's ok but one day she may roll for the first time and you won't be expecting it. Babies have also been known to get stuck down the cushions and suffocate. I'd advise getting a basket or portable crib she can sleep in in the living room perhaps.
