Title: Shh Pat while Thumb sucking
Post by: Jill1981 on May 26, 2017, 15:36:21 pm
We are just getting started with our routine. My dd is almost 4 months old. She just found her thumb (like yesterday) of she's quite and sucking her thumb, so I still need to sh Pat her to sleep?

Hi and welcome to BW forums :)

Shush/pat is something you do as much or as little of as is needed for your LO to gradually learn to self settle. If she is content to fall to sleep sucking her thumb this is self settling and there is no need to shush/pat. If she needs a little then that's fine, and if she needs a lot that's fine too. Shush/pat is gradually reduced over time to teach independent sleep skills and is returned to or increased during more tricky times.

hope this helps
