Title: How to survive the summer home with 5 year old and 2 year old
Post by: Chloevalentine on May 04, 2018, 02:45:41 am
My 5 year old will be starting kindergarten this year and we are also moving to a new town. I was considering summer camp being that I usually do send him for a couple hours few days a week but this year I’m thinking of keeping him home. Now that little brother is not a baby anymore he’s turning 2 in July I thought maybe we could stay home this summer and just enjoy the time spent and not have any routine or rush out of the house. But part of me is thinking I might regret this when the kids are bored and fighting or begging for screen time. My older one is also not much of an independent player and I’m worried I won’t be able to manage his time well if that makes sense.
My other concern is that at this age of my little one who’s 21 months it’s quite difficult to take them places together alone. I can’t manage them at the playground with one on bigger stuff and the other on little kid side. Even the lake. My oldest wants to far in the water with me but I have the little one who wants to do eveything big brother does. Anyway I’m looking for some advice. Thanks.

You'll be in the new town the whole summer? Is it a fair size town?  Ours is smallish but we have some stuff to do locally - library, park, swimming pool. Tbh when DD3 was younger we mainly went for walks/bikes to the park or played in our own backyard - but I work part time so not an entire summer without a break!

you will probably still want some sort of routine, although it can be a fairly loose routine.  As PP said, there are probably some places you can go once or twice a week, like the library, pool, or the park.  When my kids were that little, we liked to have a lazy morning (by which I mean maybe an hour  :P ), breakfast, dressed, and go somewhere in the morning.  Depending on where, I might pack a picnic lunch if we might not be home in time.  But we'd be home in time for naps (mine were closer in age; you might just have quiet time for the 5YO).  After naptime, it was usually cool enough to play outside in the backyard or swim in the pool.

There is a lake in the community. But I’m just concerned that I can’t handle the two together in certain places. I’m also wondering if my 5 year old will get bored without other kids his age. Being that he’s used to being in preschool 5 days a week.

Mine are 6 and 2.5 and I only work school terms so gets hols off. It’s tricky meeting both needs but we do like Jaime and don’t rush out but take picnic lunch to a park then back for nap although DS2 has refused it this week so CN in car on way home. Then chill at home and play in garden. I try and do something both like and eldest will look after youngest if no other friends his age so it works ok, sometimes I’ll do a thing eldest is into 1 day and swap next day. Always take the buggy/stroller so you have spare hands and snacks for bribery  ;D
