Title: 10 month NW take hour to resettle...
Post by: megan.allysa on June 13, 2018, 06:50:08 am
Over the last couple weeks NW have gotten harder and harder to resettle. LO wakes 2 or 3 times and takes anywhere from 30 mins to upwards of an hour to get back into the crib. We nurse at the beginning of those NW.

We have not sleep trained. She has been realtivly easy to get to bed, taking maybe 5 mins of rocking and then transplant to crib, she rolls into her tummy and sleeps peacefully. At least this is the case at BT and naps...bot so much for NW.

She will instantly sleep in arm And when we go to put her down she snaps awake and refuses to lay back down. We pick up she snuggles in and falls right back to sleep. If we sit with her long enough I guess she goes deep enough under that we are then able to transplant, but it's wearing us out.

Need answers! Why is she doing this? What can we do to fix it?

Hi :)

It would be really helpful to have an idea of what your DD's daytime routine looks like - EAS format is easiest for us to interpret as its what we're used to, eg:
7 - wake, milk
8 - solids
10 - nap
etc.

At this time, she thinks she needs you there to get to sleep. She's learned how to sleep and you're always involved, so she will have a hard time going to sleep without you cuddling her.

I think if you want to stop doing this (I assume that's why you posted), you will need to help her learn to sleep without being on you. That is much better done with an appropriate routine, so lets get that sorted first, then we can work out how to teach her independent sleep skills. Nobody here is going to tell you not to respond to her, its really important that she feels safe and knows you will help her when she needs it.

Sorry I missed you! It's been really crazy here. Lots of traveling. She is now 11 months and just cut her 6th tooth. So teething fun mixed in with all this.

Her schedule goes like this
5 am wake-wants a confort nurse and a rock. I know she's not actually hungry and it tends to mess with our first feed of the day, so I would like to cut this one. Trouble is it can take awhile to get her back down, this is the most annoying/problem we are looking to fix
6:30 wake and nurse
E 7 solid
A 8 commute and playtime
E 9:30 nurse
*10 snack sometimes or just playing
S 11 nap often sleeps for 2 hours and I have to get her up, occasionally will only do and hour and a half, if she does we bump her afternoon routine up bit.
E 1 wake and nurse
1:30 solids lunch
A 2 outside, often the pool
E 4 nurse
S 4:30 nap
5 wake
E 6 nurse
6:30 dinner
E 7:30 nurse topoff before bed
S 8/8:15 lights out
1(or so) she's up I nurse and 30-40 mins she's back down.

We are baby led weaning so she has to nurse before any solid foods. She's comes to work with me and we have a commute @ 5 otherwise we would do dinner then. She's likes a long A time, it took us a while to figure that out so I am always kinda weary to mess with it more.

He sleep routine is this
Naps

About 15 mins before sleep we go into her room and play quite for 5 with some lullabies, then check her diaper. Turn off the big light close the curtains turn on her white noise grab her lovie and read a book. ( She's not really a fan of reading time if you have any tips for that!:p) then we get her wearable blanket on turn of the lamp and lullabies and rock for 5. -if we're at work it's more of a walk then a rock but still only takes 5- I lay her down and she's out.

Nighttime

We go for a quick walk around the block-weather permitting- then come into her room. Change diaper, lotion, jammies nurse brush teeth. Daddy takes her we turn off the lights pull curtains turn on the white noise get lovie and read for a few minutes. Get her in her blanket kiss good night and I leave her daddy to it. It usually takes him5-10 mins and she's out.

Ok, sorry its taken so long for me to reply!

Routine looks fine and seems stable from what you've written, so lets look at how we can get her sleeping more independently.

I understand from what you've written that you're putting her down asleep and she then stays asleep. Does she ever wake early from a nap and need resettling?

If she is always being put down asleep, I think the main thing to concentrate on is to put her down drowsy but awake, then gradually put her down more awake. Another option is just to put her down awake and use shush/pat or put down to help her calm and fall asleep.

We seem to be really bad at actually catching each other! Its been a month from my last update.

We struggled to figure out her naps for the first few months. Now that we have them figured out she hasn't woken up early in months. She will consistently get an hour and a half, more usually up to two hours. Once in a blue moon, she will wake at an hour and 20; but I have not tried to resettle those. I will just nurse her and get her up. As we transition to 1 nap I will let her sleep up to 2.5 hours.

Yes, we are your classic accidental parenting case. We have not properly sleep trained. Honestly, it spikes my anxiety just thinking about it. We will be traveling in about 10 days and will be away from home and then be coming back just in time to pack up and move cross country...from everything I read these are all things that are not recommended during sleep training. Do you have any tips or advice on what we can do in the meantime?
