Title: 4 months old / general naps issues and nightwakings
Post by: Mammazzilla on August 09, 2018, 14:25:32 pm
Hi again,
First of all thanks for the advice you gave me last time, since our A time got closer to 2H the first nap of the day is actually longer and touching wood it seems like the 45 min naps are improving. So the first nap now is 1.5/2.15H. The 2nd , 3rd and sometimes 4th are only 45 minutes thou... I can sometimes extend the second nap but not always and only if I hold him for 10 minutes. Nights since 3 weeks are an absolute nightmare and very erratic as well. One night we deal with 3 NW sometimes with 6 NW. I try to feed only if he's very hungry, or else I replace the paci, cuddle him and he goes down again. He used to only wake twice to eat. Lately he rolled on both sides, so I know this could affect his sleep and he was also a bit constipated but I'd like to know if you think there's something I should do to improve the nights. He's EBF, never CIO takes all his naps in his crib beside my bed. our EASY routine is more or less like this:

7.15 E
7.45A
9.00/9.15 S (depends on his sleep clues)
10.45/11.00 E (I tried to extend the 4H routine but he doesn't seem quite ready yet)
11.30A
12.30 S
13.45 E awake / try to resettle sometimes it works most time not
14.15 A
14.45 S
15.30 A
16.30 E (this feed is difficult cause he's already tired)
17.15 S
18.00 A
19.15E
19.45bath
20.00S

If I can resettle him for the 2nd nap (he wakes cranky) than I'm forced to have a catnap at 6pm till 6.15/6.20 or else he doesnt arrive to the bathtime. Putting him down before 8.00pm doesnt suit either, he than wakes at 9.00/11.00 and so on.

What do you think? do you think that the night wakings are due to a bad EASY? anything you would improve?

NW are 0.30 (NF)
and after that anytime after 2am, worst nights every 45min better nights at 3.30/4.00 to eat than at 6.15 and than 7.15 to wake.

Sorry for the long post, night wakes are killing me!

Hi there
Sorry you didn't get a reply yet.

Looking at your EASY it seems the A times are too short.  Looks like he was awake only 1.5hr from 11.00 - 12.30.  I would aim to have all your A times at 2hrs but if the last nap of the day is only a CN rather than a full nap then reduce the last A time to perhaps 1hr 45 to avoid OT in the night sleep (currently the last A time 2hows as 2hrs which is possibly too long after the last CN).

Learning to roll can definitely unsettle sleep at night. Maybe a growth spurt too.  If he's hungry in the night I would go ahead and feed and get everyone back to sleep as quickly as possible.  Try to get some rest in the day for yourself so the nights aren't as hard on you. As soon as he's asleep you really need to try to rest rather than catch up on house work etc.

Thanks for the kind reply, I'll try to prolonge the A time and see if that helps!
