Title: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on September 27, 2018, 07:30:30 am
My 3 year old’s sleep is worse than newborn!! Any light at the end of the tunnel? 🤦‍♀️

What is his/her routine?  Does he/she still nap during the day?  Independent sleeper?
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on September 27, 2018, 19:07:41 pm
Always been an independent sleeper, good routines. No naps anymore, since she was about 30 months.
She is in bed for just before 7 and usually asleep wishing 10 mins. Our issues are she now has night wakings, not every night tho, and she is terrible for ewu, around 5-6 am
I know it’s a phase but just wondering how long this one usually lasts 🙈

Well we are with you 32 months old now turned into a NW boy who wants our bed!
Hoping it passes and it’s all to do with language spurt.

Zoe, they are such hard work  :o
I have to admit, her mouth is always in overdrive!!
Why has landed in our house so we get a million questions at bedtime! Just when you’re exhausted!
The NW we got very strict with and now use a reward chart for stays by in bed unless she really needs us and fingers crossed it worked so far.
We also use a night light with a sun and moon in to determine bedtime and morning time and she seems ok with it so far. I swear they’re one step ahead of us at this age and no nap time for us to recharge!!
Good luck, we’re all in it together x

Lol they are indeed one step ahead!
Sounds like it’s going well for you, we need to get the gro clock out I think x

As we speak!!! We had a NW/ewu??!! Crying for no reason ten demanding me not daddy!! She got a telling off and no reward sticker today and surprisingly she was the best behaved getting ready today as she knew she’d crossed the line!!
She has apparently been v good at nannas today and mum suggested I gave her a sticker reward and I said no cos I don’t want to confuse her and let her think it’s related to last nights fiasco! Only so much their brains can compute at this age!!
Nanna Hayes the thought that littly is ever in trouble!!

Bless her it’s such a tricky age. Glad the rewards work x

Another quick question? She sometimes doesn’t seem tired at her normal 7pm bedtime, should I push it back or just carry on? She averages an 11 hour ish night these days with the odd 12-12.5 hr maybe once a week. I’d hate to push her too much and risk an ot. Hard to know what’s a phase or what’s new routine is t it? X
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 09, 2018, 18:33:37 pm
I’d just add an extra 15 mins on or do extra story and cuddle.x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 09, 2018, 19:18:54 pm
That’s what I was thinking hun. She’s just started messing a bit, still in her bed, so far anyway. She was always really ready for sleep and would pass out almost straight away, but hubby and I have noticed the last week or so she is taking around 15 mins to settle some nights and is occasionally needing a gentle reminder that it’s time to lie down and sleep. This usually does the trick and she tends to settle soon after this. What I will say is she never shuts up  :o even as I’m leaving the room she’s still talking to me lol. Very sweet as it’s mostly love you mummy, but I figure she just knows how to gets round me lol. Doesn’t stop me telling her off tho lol x

This is definitely a bad week. Mega bedtime messing and ewu’s  :(
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 10, 2018, 18:05:40 pm
In theory she should be in her knees. She’s been up since 5:45 and had a full on day at my mums. Spent the afternoon in the park but she’s still avoiding sleep. I’m knackered cos it sets my anxiety off and I don’t sleep  :'(
Had a massive row with hubby this morning so had a really horrible day at work and now messing again at bedtime  :'(
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 10, 2018, 19:51:11 pm
Awhh rough day honey, just breathe it’s just a phase and it will pass but I know it’s tough. We’ve made the mistake of letting DS2 into our bed and now I’ve got that habit to break.

When was she 3? It could be the developmental shenanigans that go with birthdays!? x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 11, 2018, 09:16:50 am
She was 3 on the 31st August so not long ago. I know it’s a phase but god it’s a killer, especially when my anxiety is related to sleep  :'(

I know Hun, so hard watching them run on empty tho cos you know a crash will happen any time. Do you think we should switch her bedtime routine a bit and do bath before stories? She seems really settled at quiet time then she has her bath and it’s almost like it wakes her up again!! Never been an issue until now though, so stuck as to whether to just ride the possible phase and then decide x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 11, 2018, 18:10:40 pm
Tiny improvement tonight in that I didn’t have to go up and tell her off for messing around  ::)
Still taking a little while to settle, despite the ewu.
Lucky me, we’re in the caravan this weekend  :o ;D happy days lol
I know what you mean about them in your bed. So many times recently I’ve been tempted as I know she will usually resettle, but I’ve stuck to my guns and just been a zombie!!
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 11, 2018, 19:01:15 pm
I’d do bath first then cuddles with stories, naturally an hour after a bath your body calms ready for sleep.
Oh well you might as well enjoy the caravan and not worry whilst her sleeps a bit off x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!

Defo gonna try that tonight. Up at 5:30 again today  ::)

Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 12, 2018, 13:24:26 pm
She’s at pre school today, I’m at work.
As someone who has always done bath then straight to bed how should I play it? Her normal bedtime is 7, asleep within 10-15 mins. So we do quiet time from 6, bath 6:30, into bed 6:50-6:55. Quiet time tends to be reading or jigsaws.
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 12, 2018, 15:38:02 pm
I’d do bath then into bedroom, pj’s on. Read some stories have a cuddle then into bed.
For us we have bath, go downstairs have a cup of milk maybe a snack then some stories and bed.
Depends on what you’d prefer x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 12, 2018, 15:51:14 pm
I’m just thinking of which way to play it if you say it takes an hour after bath for sleep etc. Would mean bath around 6 then it’s quite a long time until bedtime to be in her bedroom. However we’ve always stayed upstairs after bath, except for mega early bath when poorly etc. So hard to know how to play it I guess. I think I’ll try your way and do bath and pjs at 6 then downstairs for quiet time and see how that goes x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 12, 2018, 18:20:16 pm
She seemed to like stories before bed and she was more chilled, almost asleep on my knee. Saying that she’s probably knackered with all the early mornings. I let her choose which way we did it, so we did supper when we got in from nursery about 5:45, then bath just after 6, pj’s on by 6:25 then downstairs all snuggly for stories.

Awhh sounds lovely, that’s exactly the times we do things. Gives time to wind down for my pair of lively boys x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 13, 2018, 06:23:08 am
Worked for bedtime, still wide awake at 5:30!! Defo a development phase I think. She stays in her room til the sun comes on which is a bonus I guess. I’m awake cos I’ve heard her and I never go back to sleep sadly. So my days start then too  ::)
When she does come bouncing in she’s full on singing and talking etc. Very busy child at the minute. I can’t take bt any earlier than it is, especially as we have the clocks going back in a few weeks time!!
Just got to ride this one out again I guess x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 13, 2018, 10:43:03 am
Yep is just ride it out, try an earlier BT at the weekend if you can just to fend off OT x

We’ve been fortunate the last few weeks, she’s done ewu’s but then caught up with at least one good sleep in.  Not this week  :o

The new bedtime routine seems to work, she’s proper zonked having stories. Only got through 2 of the 3 tonight, flat out by 6:45. Not looking forward to the ewu in the caravan  ::) at least at home she stays in her room  ;D

I think it’s peaking!! Awake before 6 every day regardless of bedtime!! And my word she is mean  :'(she’s currently having the biggest benny ever because daddy is helping her cos I’ve got a headache  :'( so need this phase to pass soon. She is so blumming tired and miserable all the time.

can you try a really early BT for one night just see if she catches up by tacking on at BT?x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 21, 2018, 09:38:12 am
She’s been that off I think she’d wake mega mega early! But I’ll try a 6:30 ish maybe tonight to try and stave off OT. The problem we’ve got coming next week is the darn clock change  ::)
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 21, 2018, 12:27:10 pm
I know the clock change is a pain but hopefully should be back to normal after a couple of days x

We be given in and let her nap in the car  ???
She’s been in a fowl mood all morning so obviously knackered. Who knows what bedtime will bring but to be honest I’m past caring right now. She’s messing at the dinner table too so I’m done  ::)
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 21, 2018, 13:47:29 pm
Just pop her to bed a tad later if it’s a long nap if it’s only 30 mins stick to normal.

We’re having mealtime issues too so you’re not alone x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 21, 2018, 14:19:18 pm
Was only about 30 mins so I’ll try for normal bed. I don’t know whether she’s fixated on the groclock lamp she’s got  :o she loves to tell us the sun is awake but I’m wondering if she’s sitting waiting for it to come on  ???  I’ve had a chat with her today and said that if the moon is on she must go back to sleep until I come in for her and it will be when the sun is awake??!! Who the heck knows eh? Brain melting. She’s happier for the sleep as she’s munching on an apple in the car on our way home. Was a quick dash to Ikea x

I managed to get her to eat some tea tonight and bt was probably 5 mins later going to sleep than usual but I can live with that  ;)
Now to try and re charge my batteries ready for another day  :o
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 21, 2018, 19:09:59 pm
Sounds like a good day in the end! We are having lots of issues with not wanting to eat at the table, not wanting what’s offered etc. For us I’ve found the best success is either little and often meals or having him sit with his plate empty and serving from bowls in the middle, takes the control battle away and then he is in charge as such of what he wants. Also he’s into eating what I’m having so I just put up 2 bowls of the meal one small and one adult size but I take the small one put the other to one side he then says wants to eat mine and so I give him my bowl 😉 really his.

Have a good relax tonight and try not to get anxious as it won’t change how she sleeps but will just play on your mind.
Have a nice big deep bath...my idea of heaven x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 21, 2018, 20:18:35 pm
Thanks hun. I’ve found letting her help cook meals really helps. She is still finishing her antibiotics for a chest infection so that hasn’t helped the eating situation.
I’m doing well with my anxiety to be fair. Just so hard seeing her so tired all the time. I know I can’t do anything to make her sleep longer in a morning. It’s just a constant game of sleep catch up at the minute  :'(

fingers crossed for a good night for you! DS2 asked me to take him to bed at 6.30pm the other night, said mummy I’m tired and my legs are tired. But then still up in the night! Developmental and growth spurts I think x

Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 22, 2018, 19:26:53 pm
The days are getting so bad too. She gets so grumpy by tea time it’s horrible  :'(
I’ve turned the night light off tonight to see if that helps, it is quite bright. When we are in the caravan her bunk is really dark and she doesn’t have a problem with it and she’s always been in a dark room up until recently when she experienced ‘scared’ for the first time.
I’m running out of ideas. I was reading an old post on here earlier and someone was having similar issues with their 4 yr old. Someone suggested pushing them really over tired by moving bedtime later by over an hour, gradually over a few days and then sticking to the really late bedtime, despite the wu times!! Apparently it can help reset the body clock.
I’m not sure if my littly is too young at 3 to try this and I don’t want to mess just now with the daylight savings happening this week.
Have you heard of this Zoe? X
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Haribo2012 on October 22, 2018, 20:54:56 pm
I’d prob try moving BT later by 15 mins each day to take into account clock change but maybe stick an odd CN in. I have heard of it but never tried it, worth a try maybe!?

I turned the blue light off out sun clock it’s too bright and blue light is more disturbing for sleep. We leave hall light on and have a red separate plug in light in both boys rooms as reds and oranges are more sleep inducing x
Title: Re: 3 year old sleep!!!
Post by: Conniesmummy on October 22, 2018, 21:19:59 pm
Thanks hun. It isn’t a gro clock, it’s a Mickey Mouse night light with sun and moon feature that works like gro clock if that makes sense. I’d heard about blue light so switched to the lamp but think it was just a little too bright. If it goes badly tonight I may try a small orange plug in x

Well I gave in last night when she woke at 3:45!! When she didn’t settle by 4:30 and looked like she was up for the day, I got into her ridiculously tiny bed for the rest of the night  :'( she went straight back to sleep....I didn’t  ::)

It’s a killer. We’ve extended her bed today just in case and she’s got a new single duvet on and a proper pillow!! It’s Disney frozen so hoping to use the bribe factor  :-\ also moved her bed off the wall as I thought it was cold  ::)
Who knows eh?

Thanks hun. I’ve got a go appt sat morning so feel better about that. They were really helpful as originally the next appt was 2 weeks time!! I did well not to get upset but explained my anxiety and she squeezed me in.
I want to reward her as she did stay in her bed all night. I suppose I got lulled into a false sense of security as she’d slept well the previous night.
I just wish I didn’t struggle with anxiety 😔

It’s our wedding anniversary today and hubby has made a nice tea bless him. It’s 10yrs so having a fizz. She was very teary after her bath tonight. Had a meltdown because I had to ask her firmly to tidy the bath toys away. Fortunately bt to date is more settled, fingers crossed. She happily climbs into bed and I read to her and she settles off ok. I guess you can’t have it all eh?
Just really hate seeing her so miserable and snappy 😳

Apart from trying to constantly nod off if we are in the car after lunchtime, she has seemed ok. Nursery haven’t reported any tiredness etc??!!
We are losing the night light tonight, replaced with a lamp on a timer. Off after she’s asleep and will come on at wake up time. I’ve tried to explain it as simply as I can and she seems to have got it?
No tears about the missing Mickey lamp so that’s good so far x
