Title: 2-1 Transition Advice Needed (14mo)
Post by: KKmom on August 21, 2019, 15:00:29 pm
Hi! My 14mo son gave up his 2nd nap while on vacation the last two weeks. Now we’re back home and trying to settle into a new routine. He used to nap 2hrs in the AM then 40min-1hr in the PM. Now that we’re down to 1 nap, he’s only napping 1hr30! It’s such a long stretch on both ends of the day and he seems to need more sleep. He wakes crying from his nap but can’t go back to sleep, and if he wakes before 7 he also wakes crying (he generally wakes happy). He absolutely refuses a PM nap now, and will cry for 20-30min straight if I try to put him down for one (I tried yesterday since he woke super early and only napped 1hr30 and no luck. I got him up after 30min).

I thought when they transition to one nap it’s supposed to be 2.5-3hrs long? How can I extend his nap? Is it possible that he’s overtired going into his nap and that’s causing it to be shorter? Or UT? Advice welcome- it’s a very long stretch to get from 1:30 to 7p. He always used to fall asleep easy & quickly for his first nap and resist the second. I could try putting him down earlier for his 1st nap but what if he still naps only 1hr30 and then he’ll be awake an even longer stretch in the eve!?

Here is our EASY with the new 1 nap day:
7:15- wake & BF
8:30- breakfast
11- snack
11:25-BF
Nap- 11:45-1:15
2- lunch
4-snack
6-dinner
6:45-BF
7- bed (usually asleep by 7:30)

This morning he woke around 6:30, so I got him up, changed him, BF and put him back in bed to see if he would go back to sleep. He fell back to sleep at 7:35. Hoping this morning catnap will help him get closer to 12:30-1 nap time and maybe we can get to a 1-3p nap in the coming weeks. Not sure if this is a good strategy and probably won’t work every day anyway? Really appreciate I put!

Thanks, Kristin

I found the increase in AM awake time really helped my LO extend her nap when moved to one nap.

I also found for a short while (as you work through the transition) I would do a little APOP with a short BF cat nap in late afternoon 430 ish (15-20 min) to avoid the OT at bed time

Ok, thanks for your input. Appreciate it. I was trying to avoid him getting OT and taking too short of a nap as a result. If it’s only 1hr30 then it’s really hard to get through the day. Yesterday he napped well- 2hr20min- but then was up from 2:45-3:30 in the morning this morning. No fun! It’s definitely a process and he’s so tired right now. He won’t CN at all! I wish he would.

I am sorry the transition can be tough. Have you tried wake to sleep to help extend the night time sleep/avoid early wake s? I have had a lot of success with habitual wakes, not sure if it will work in this situation.
