My dd is 7 months old and I was wondering if anyone knows if its okay to feed her strawberries? Also should they be cooked or raw?
-
I have read that they should be left until after 12 months of age. :D
-
I actually called my ped with the same question and they did suggest waiting until 12 months for strawberries. I suppose the allergic reactions can be quite strong so better safe than sorry :D

Oh whoops
DS has been eating them for several months and they are his favourite so since his birthday is next week, I'm not going to deprive him.
I think its only because the seeds are indigestible and their stomachs need to be able to cope with passing something through without digesting it.
-
I think it's the acidic aspect. Too many will give my lo a diaper rash

I give my 7 month old occasion strawberry and apple mixes from the supermarket. they usually take all the seeds out so they only have the fruit.
My son has no problems with them. I am not the one who will deprive my son of anything because of possible allergies. No one is allergic to any types of food in our family and I believe that if someone whould developp an allergy they will at any time of life. Some other might feel differently.
My daughter ate peannut butter as soon as she could have it and she has never been allergic to nuts.

If strawberries are such a no-no, why is it that you can purchase combination fruits for babies that include strawberries? Things that make you go hmmm!

i gave my baby some strawberries yesterday and she loved them. i havent heard about waiting until 12 months.
-
The waiting for strawberries thing (which I didn't) is due really to the really high allergen rate it has. Also, with that, it has sevear reactions associated with them.
My sister is allergic to them and she swells like a baloon if she eats them, cooked or raw, and has to do with the natural dye in them.

I recently asked my nurse that very question, with you in mind. She said that whatever is causing the allergy seems to be coocked out in the jarring process, and it is the FRESH berries that should be avoided.

I have a baby cookbook that says they are ok starting around 8 months, but to put them through a mouli or sieve to get all the seeds out.
-
you do have to be carefull with them i gave my eldest daughter stwaberries ,she woke up the next morning looking like one she was covered in a rash ... turns out shes allergic
-
my daughters been eating them since she was about 10 months, i dont give her too many at one sitting. only about 2/3 cut up.
-
My recipe book includes them in the 6-9 mo section but warns that they can be aciduc and a source of allergies. i guess be causious if you have any type of allergies in the family.
As for eating them, I cut them into halves or quarters and Holly will eat them till the cows come home!!!! They are just the right size and so easy to eat as they are soft.
Be careful though, they stain really bad!!!!

My son had fresh strawberries at 9 months and was covered in a rash but was not ill. told that he should not hvave freash ones until after 1 year but the strawberry in baby foods etc has been heated so is ok.
-
Eeek I didn't know this! Just last week I started cutting up a strawberry to add to his yoghurt and he loved it. Maybe I should hold off a bit now then? He also has the puree tubs from the supermarket which include strawberrys in a lot of the mixes.
-
My LO has ones from supermarket with strawberry mix as they have been heat treated they are ok.
-
Ive actually limited those pots anyway as my lo seems to get acid reflux if he has them too much.

Everyone is different, we could all be allergic to something or nothing, and it won't be until we try it that we find out! So, with strawberries, as with all new things, introduce them with caution, early in the day, without any other new foods, and monitor for reactions...
...I'm allergic to lettuce/salad leaves - that's bonkers, but true!
