Title: How to make rice a finger food?
Post by: {{{Angela}}} on July 04, 2005, 23:01:35 pm
I'd like to make some rice for ds because he is mainly getting his carbs from bread and pasta right now, and I eat a lot of rice.  However, he doesn't like being fed from a spoon, so how can I make rice into a finger food?  Individual grains are a bit hard to pick up  .  If there was something sticky I could use to hold the rice together...

I tend to overcook it so that it is sticky and does clump together

Both my kids have eaten rice as a finger food since they were babies. Messy, but doable.

You could also try to make risotto "balls" (ie arancini balls) from leftover risotto........if you are interested I can rustle up a recipe.

Have you tried potato as another "starch" finger food?  I make oven baked "fries", by cutting potato's into wedges, spraying with olive oil , then into a hot oven until golden.

My kids love them.

Risotto - because you can make it really sticky and they can pick it up in clumps.

Sushi rice is also good for being able to clump - short-grained rice mixed with a bit of rice wine vinegar and sugar (the recipe should be on the box)...

Great ideas!  I have a risotto recipe; I'll try that tomorrow.  I read it is better to eat brown rice than white, but I find the brown rice pretty tough.  Will he get enough nutrition from white rice?

Mmmm, I love sushi rice.  I haven't made sushi in years!  (Not the raw fish, the california rolls)

I've tried giving ds potatoes, but he doesn't seem to like them.  I'll try again.  Maybe if I put some dill on them he'll eat them.  I tried melting cheese on some potato, but he just pulled the cheese off and ate that!!

Angela--How I wish you lived closer.  X and Cooper are cut from the same cloth.  He refuses to eat potato as well.  He does like sushi rice as my dh makes rolls often.  It is easy to make the balls with it.  We also do sweet potato fries which he will eat.

Hope he is doing well.

Well, we tried risotto today and ds liked it (for a while anyway; he ate some and then starting throwing it on the floor   I think he gets bored really easily at mealtimes).  So yay! another carb!  He's still refusing to eat bread - even raisin bread!!

I wish Xavier would eat sweet potatoes!  They are so nutritious, but he hates hates hates them!  I've been trying to get him to eat them since he started solids.  I tried every few weeks, but as soon as they hit his mouth, he shudders and makes a face!
