Title: Khyan had a bad night - would love some insight !
Post by: Khyan & Sahria's mum on July 19, 2005, 02:25:36 am
For about a month now Khyan mostly sleeps thru the night however last night he didn't but it was alittle unusual and I would love to hear what you think and how you would deal with it.

A bit of background:
Khyan had a cold and then gastro a couple of weeks ago and then an ear infection and he is half way thru his antibiotics for this.

I give him nurofen before bed because of the pain and normally this will get him thru till morning.

He is an eating machine the last 2 days but last night because he had eaten so much dinner he only had 60ml of his bottle before bed.

He had a really early nap yesterday from 10.30 - 11am and that was it for the day. He went to bed at 6.45pm and really zonked out.

He woke once between 6.45 and 11pm where he needed me to tuck him back in, rub his back and walk out (30secs max) however he did re-settle himself a couple of times in that span.

We went to bed at 11pm and then at 2am he started calling out - we left him to see if he would settle and then he started to cry so I went to him.
I lay him back down and put my hand on his bottom, he was really unsettled and whined the whole time - He needed me with him for 2 hours

I have to admit that he is ALWAYS unsettled and waking lots when he is overtired at bedtime, so I assumed that this was what was happening, then I thought possible hunger due to not enough bottle before bed, before I started to think maybe it was a bit of pain.

I gave him nurofen and within 10 minutes he was asleep and stayed that way till 7.30am.

So my problems are:

I don't like to give nurofen without food - and I DON'T want to re-introduce a night bottle  but panadol doesn't sit well with him.

The next issue is whinging isn't crying and therefore what should I do ? He is fine as long as I put my hand on him - which I do and then reduce the pressure until I'm no longer touching him and then he cries again  so I'm confused as to what to do.

This is an unusual situation and doesn't happen all the time, so it isn't something really to FIX but to deal once every couple of months.

What would you do?  Just give the nurofen ?

TIA

i would either give him the pain reliever or just sit with him .. if he is not feeling well he might have just wanted his mommy with him for comfort.. i know angela is like that .. and i have sat with her and cuddled her until she was fine and sometimes that has taken hours or sometimes repeatedly in the night

i think after he is feeling well he will be fine

I'd give the pain meds. I don't like to give them on an empty tummy either, but I make an exception on occasion. Tyler's always more unsettled when he's sick too, and it sounds like overtiredness may have played a part for Khyan. I wouldn't worry too much unless it becomes a habit again...it's probably just a hiccup.

I do the hand on the bum thing for whining/crying when Tyler doesn't settle himself, but I keep an eye out for any signs that he may start needing it to settle. Like Jayne said, Khyan probably just needed some extra snuggles because he's been sick. HTH!

Thanks - I too think that he needed extra mummy/snuggle time. But I also think that the reason behind it is the pain (ear infection) so I am glad I gave the meds but alittle nervous as to what tonight holds for us  :?

The overtiredness may also play a part tonight again - as he if waking a little earlier therefore wanting to nap at 11.30 and waking at 12.15pm - going to bed at 7pm. This all makes for a really tired little boy

Maybe tomorrow I'll have to set up something to keep him occupied and busy till 12.30pm so that he will nap alittle later and hopefully sleep a bit longer. It could back fire on me but oh well....

fingers crossed that tonight is some what better - thanks again.

I would consider Kyra and excellent sleeper and we still have nights like you describe. Everyonce in a while (whether it is teeth, sick, nightmares or who knows what), we have a night where she needs some help (sometimes up to two hours of mom or dad being with her). I can't always figure out a cause, but I can tell you that it happens every other month or so. Most of the time, if there is no apparent reason, she is fine the very next night. If not... we usually have figured out that she is sick or her gums prove that we are getting another tooth (which we are doing currently!). I hope he had a better night following the troublesome one!

Yep he was fine the following night but has been a little off the last couple of days and then I saw the tip of an eye tooth

OHHHHH NOOOO more teething ! At least there are only 3 more to go... well until the 2 year molars come thru

It's true that he has been a good little sleeper in the last couple of months and only is awake at night when something is wrong, sore or he is severely overtired or sick.

So I really shouldn't complain !

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME !

I know better than to post about Khyan's good sleeping, that kind of behaviour always jinx us

Well as a result we were up 3 hours straight last night with Khyan crying and crying  even after I gave him some nurofen he still cried for 2.5hrs which is quite unusual.

I know that something is on the way - just which one will it be: tooth, illness, developmental.... hmmmm we will have to see.

Thanks for listening  :D

I'm so sorry you had a bad night!! It definitely sounds like something is coming. Hopefully it's just teeth or developmental stuff - not illness.

Kyra is cutting her fourth eye tooth and it has been a few months for her to get all four of them. They are by far the worst (even more so than her molars) and took the longest. Interestingly enough, it has started to effect her more during the day than at night. She becomes a different little girl and it is on and off while the gums flare up, cool down, repeat and so on until the tooth finally starts playing peek-a-boo. It's there, then it disappears. Tops came in more quickly once they showed than the bottoms. The bottom one seems to be growing VERY slowly. She will even show me which one hurts when asked and is always right when she grabs at the space on her lower right side. Poor thing! Keep reminding yourself that the teething will come to end eventually. In the meantime, just stick with your routine. Some nights will be good, some will be bad :?

I hope hope hope he isn't getting sick!

Well Khyan has severe tonsilitis - blood, pus the works and REALLY high fevers still ! He also has glue ear and is generally miserable.

He slept quite well until meds wore off at 3am, i gave him some  more as he was burning up but nothing seemed to make him feel any better and well we pretty much stayed up from that time with a little 30min nap at 6.30am and then a grizzly LO and tired mummy started their daily routines.

Thanks to you all for thinking of us - it's really lovely to know that you are all there for us.

xx

Well last night he was really good ! he slept thru till 6am  Yeah I said WOW too !

He is still unwell, but the fever isn't as high and he isn't as whingy but he does now have a cold and the area between his nose and chin is what DH likes to refer as "a glazed donut" - LOL

He is really clogged up but atleast he is eating, sleeping some what better and he is on the way to being back to himself.

Thanks for all your thoughts again xx
