Title: toddler bed, twin bed, full bed, what?
Post by: Stacie:Emma&Josh Mom on July 22, 2005, 18:37:37 pm
Dd is going to be moving to a big girl bed soon and we have a few options.  Her crib is convertible to a toddler bed and then into a twin bed headboard.  Do I use her toddler bed now or move her into another bed and keep her bed as the crib for #2 (due in Jan)?  I have a friend who offered us a trundle bed which is what I'd like her to end up with in her room as it's good for guests and such later on so should I just start her in that?  My mom thinks the toddler bed is an easier transition cause it's still pretty cozy and not as big as the trundle (twin sized), but I'm wondering if in the end that means two transitions, one to the toddler bed and then one to the twin bed and if we shouldn't just do that all as one transition as I know people who've done that.  We also own a full bed that's currently a guest bed that she could use for awhile until we buy her a bed of her own, but I'm thinking she'll get lost in that one.  Also trying to decide whether to make the bed transition soon and then into her new room later (but before baby gets here) or just do them all in one fell swoop.  What have you all done???

Your lo is 20 months, right?  Mine is 17, and though he never slept in his crib well or in his toddler bed (which generally just uses the crib mattress) we just purchased a twin bed for him, and he is sleeping SO WELL!!!

It's WONDERFUL!

The decision is ultimately your's to make, but IMHO, if you're going to put them in a place that they can get out of anyways, I'd skip the todller bed.  I will with the next one!

I'm thinking transition into new room & big girl bed at same time might be too much.  But you know her personality- is she pretty easygoing?
I ditto the twin bed thibg.  We did straight from crib into twin bed.  -You could use a stool if she can't climb up in it on her own.  Madeline has loved her bed way more than her crib.
But a good transition might be using the twin headboard from her crib- & let her watch  you & your dh as you change it- then it will still feel like it's "hers."  What an exciting time!

don't know if you've made your decision yet, but we had a full-size bed already so we just gave it to jaina.  it was a new bed in a new room, so she took to it pretty well.  we did just put in on the floor.  started with just naps, and then after 2 weeks she went in there full time.  she loves it.  free beds from friends are the best kind, and if that's the type you want, i'd say go for it.

IMHO, i think toddler beds are a waste of time because it's just yet another transition you have to make.  but you know your dd's personality best.

I think I would do the bed and room at once.  We went to a twin bed and Ewan loved it, he had so much more room, he was doing a lot of banging off of the sides of the crib.

Good luck with the decision.

We also went straight to the twin bed and the new room at the same time.  We did this just before her second birthday and her baby sister came 4 month later.  She loves her big girl bed and room and the nice thing is that she does not seem to have any lasting attachement to her old room, when we started putting baby stuff in there she started calling in baby Lily's room.
