Title: Must cry/scream before sleep?
Post by: Hoosier92 on July 29, 2005, 23:07:03 pm
Anyone have a baby that seems to need to cry or scream before they can go to sleep?  My DS recently went from being a difficult reflux baby to being the perfect baby for one solid week.  Then, for some unknown reason, he has reverted back to his 45-minute naps and now he seems to need to cry loudly for about 5 minutes before he'll let us soothe him to sleep.  Is he just overstimulated or overtired?  He seems to do it no matter when I try to put him down. He's still on reflux meds even tho it seems to have virtually disappeared!

Hi there. My DD has done this for about the past 4 weeks or so...not sure why either. I just let her scream for a couple of minutes, then it winds down to a whimper, then a little snort or two, the she is out like a light. Usually takes about 5 minutes total!  It doesn't matter if she is over tired or over stimulated or just down for her normal nap or bedtime. I am hoping it's a stage she'll eventually grow out of!!
How old is your DS?

Glad to hear we're not alone!  Daniel is 6.5 months old now and has never been a good napper.  Finally his reflux subsided and we had one perfect week then bam! here comes the screaming before naps.  Ay yi yi....

You are not alone.  My little Joshua does the exact same thing.  He's 3 months old, and started the crying when he was about 6 weeks old.

It's starting to get a little better, and grandpa can actually put him to sleep without crying.  But usually he screams for about 5 minutes, and then he just snuggles in and goes to sleep.  The people down the street have the exact same thing happening as well.

It's seems like it's his way of blocking out the world to help him get to sleep initially.  I believe Tracy, in her book, describes this type of crying as a mantra cry.  It's a form of self-soothing.   I just make sure I have some hearing protection handy (he's got really good lungs... makes my ears ring).  With the hearing protection, the crying doesn't seem nearly as bad.  Just a silly little tip to help you get through it.  :-)

Hang in there.  He's not hurt or anything.  He just wants to explore and doesn't want to have to take that nap.

My 7 week old does this too..... between 5 and 10 minutes and then he is out. At first I was very frustrated and couldn't figure out what to do and now I have found if I just keep holding him, giving him the paci and jiggling him slightly he goes for 5- 10 minutes and he is good. Every now and then it is barely a wimper. I think too it is just how he gets himself ready to sleep.....
it's driving his daddy nuts though!  :D
