I'm just curious about how much solid food I should be giving and how often. My 5-month-old has been on solids for about 10 days. Right now I'm giving him food after 3 of his feedings every day. I don't give him more then a tablespoon of rice cereal because it constipates him, so I usually give him a tablespoon of cereal plus one ice-cube size portion of fruit or vegetable per feeding. I leave out the cereal sometimes entirely.
Am I giving him the right amounts? He'll finish it all each time, but I don't know how to tell if this is enough.

If he's finishing it all, I'd try just a bit more.
They are usually pretty good at letting you know when they're done - at least mine was!! lol He'd clamp his mouth shut, or turn his head, or just get fussy.

Our son's are a day apart in age and I also began solids about 2 weeks ago.
I give ds 3 T of rice cereal in the morning and he polishes it off AND has some milk after. So I also think that giving your ds a bit more won't hurt. If rice constipates him then why not give just a veg or just a fruit?

Sometimes I do give just a fruit or vegetable. I guess I'm stuck on the cereal because it seems like that's what EVERYONE does and so I figured he was supposed to have some. That's probably a silly reason!
I have several kinds of cereals but have only given him rice. Are there kinds that will be easier to digest? What kind do you do after rice?

Getting fussy is Kelsey's cue. Her ped. said to offer 4-6 tbsp of cereal, rice and now I can try oatmeal, in 2-3 feedings. Yet I don't always, sometimes just the fruit. But maybe baby food companies sell it mixed together now. I cut back on the food if she stops drinking all of her bottle as she normally would.
