Hi everyone,
What did you give your lo's for their first birthday cake? Store bought, homemade? I'm wondering if it's okay to give ds a traditional cake with eggs, sugar etc. There are no egg allergies in the family. I can't believe the time has come to plan for his first birthday! :( :shock: :)

We had an ice cream cake and I made a banana cake with cream cheese frosting for ds to 'destroy'. He didn't really eat much of it though, just squished the frosting around in his hands. :D
I know it's hard to believe when your lo turns ONE! Where did all the time go? :)

one of the businesses my husband oversees is a bakery, so i had them make carrot cake cupcakes

I love the cupcakes! Was that what everyone ate or did you have a separate cake for the grownups? What a cute idea! Thanks for taking the time to attach the picture.

I didn't even think of the egg allergy thing. :shock: I am glad she wasn't allergic to it... My MIL made a cake with a doll and the cake was the dress, so since I didn't make the cake I didn't even think of the eggs... She ate it and got it all over as tradition would have it... :wink:

everyone ate the cupcakes... except for the birthday girl who isn't really into sweets :wink:
i loved the idea because the party was a picnic at the park & this was just easier than cutting slices for everyone...

I just made ds a Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake with a regular cake mixture. I figured it would be okay as he'd been having scrambled egg yolks for a few weeks and had no reaction.
Although saying that, he didn't actually eat much of the cake, he just wanted to play with it!

We used a store bought sponge cake, iced it ourselves, and decorated it with picture icing. We already new that ds had no egg allergies and so that wasn't a concern for us, but as others have said, he wasn't that interested in eating much of it anyhow.

My lo was not ready for egg whites on her first birthday. My mother found out you can substitute two egg yolks for one egg in a recipe. Then she made her carrot cake cupcakes. They had cream cheese frosting.
I am glad she chose cupcakes because they were easy for her to hold. For my sister and I, my mother would make a full-sized cake, take us outside in a highchair and let us tear into it. She wanted to do this again but I didn't really like the idea of my lo face-first in a cake. Cupcakes were nicer and everybody got to share them.
We did put candles on them. We did one cupcakes for each month so there were 12. She didn't blow them out, of course, but she had fun looking at them. We saved the candle that is shaped like a 1.
There are allergies in my family so I wanted to be careful. I would be more concerned about a possible reaction to chocolate than to eggs, however. Whatever you do, I'd avoid chocolate and nuts. Eggs--meh--probably be okay.
