I think my DS has just found his hands and fingers and YES he does suck on them when he is hungry but is doing is ALOT these days is it possible he isn't ALWAYS hungery when this happends?
TIA

My ds roots/sucks most when he is either hungry or tired. Normally I feed when he wakes and he goes 2.5 hours -3 + between feedings and after he is awake about an hour he is ready for a nap and often roots/sucks/gets fussy. Putting him down to sleep cures that.

they also spend many months just exploring their hands and anything else that will fit in their mouth (feet, toys, etc). you need to just rule out hunger by context - if fed within last 2 hours not likely to be hunger. as they get older it increases and tyhen goes away later in the first year for most.

Babies usually discover their hands (while awake) between 8-12 weeks old. They are entertaining to chew on. Look for other cues to determine hunger/thirst.
Also, the teeth start coming into the jaw around 3-4 months old and the drool starts. That chewing on hands helps deal with that pain.

My baby has been LOVING sucking on his fingers the past couple of days. He's beginning to find his thumb. The only down-side is that he now drives himself crazy when he can't get his thumb to stay in his mouth more than a few minutes (He's only 8 weeks old).
