Title: The 20 minute rule
Post by: Ladybird on August 03, 2005, 14:02:21 pm
Tracey explains that when baby wakes you have to ensure you stay for the full 20mins before leaving or baby will wake again very shortly after.

Does this mean 20mins from when they have calmed, or shut there eyes?

And does this count the same for older infants, like 9-10 months?

I am so glad you posted this as I have been rereading the sleep interview and I cannot figure out what this means.  In addition, I am  confused about what the different sleep stages are (have seen conflicting info about this).  Also, what are we supposed to be doing during the 20 minutes?  Patting and shushing?  Just standing there?  My dd is 9 weeks old - if someone could please explain concisely the patting and shushing I would appreciate it.  I have both books but I can't seem to wrap my brain around what I should be doing and I am sure I am doing it wrong now...  Thanks!!!

from what i observed with my ds, the 20 mintues started when he calmed down & started shutting his eyes.

during that time i would shhh & hold a hand on his chest (didn't like pat) & gradually withdraw both as we got closer to 20 min.

when the babies get older (5-6mths+), i have found that it was better to leave once they have calmed down (either through pat/shh or pu/pd) & they will settle better on their own
