Title: Artificial sweetners, tea
Post by: Dian on August 08, 2005, 18:40:25 pm
My 2-yr old loves sipping out of my cup of tea.  I use artificial sweetner in each cup and wonder how harmful this may be for her... any advice?  It's my understanding tea doesn't contain caffeine, but I'm not sure if giving my 2-yr old tea is good/safe.

What kind of tea is it? If it's just ordinary tea, it does contain caffeine.

I don't let Henry have artificial sweeteners because I can't imagine they're very good for him, but that's just my opinion based on no facts.

Title: TEA & ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS

It's ordinary tea.  I have my reservations about sweeteners as well- it's bad enough for adults, let alone what it could be doing to kids.  What I've started giving Pia, instead of my tea, is warm milk with a dash of flavoring added to it... she doesn't seem to notice any difference so far.  I don't add any type of sugar, honey or sweetener and she seems just fine with it.  Since Pia does sneak sips of my tea, I'm still curious to know if anyone has any info about tea/artificial sweeteners and its affect on toddlers/kids.

My personal concerns with tea are two-fold.  Caffeine and Tanin.  Caffeine for obvious reasons, and Tanin because it hinders absorption of iron, even to the point of anaemia.  As for artificial sweeteners, I don't ingest them myself as I can't stand the taste, and we don't allow H any either.  Also, if I remember correctly it's actually illegal in the UK to market artificial sweeteners to under 5's, but I haven't been able to discover any research to determine the reasons why.

My lo's grandma is constantly giving her sips of iced tea with artificial sweetener in it.     Also with lemon in it.  Yes, she loves it too!  The main concern I had was the lemon, since it is too acidic for her.  But thanks for the other information--she claims it is caffeine-free tea, but I will tell her about the tannin.  I do not think it can be good for lo!
