Title: when & how to get rid of night time bottle??
Post by: Izzy-B's mommy on August 09, 2005, 02:10:15 am
I have gotten Isabella off of her bottles during the day.   She's happy with her new cups and soon we will be getting her on whole millk... So; all that is going well..

My question is her night time bottle... She gets one every night.  We sit in the rocking chair and after she's done we have a little cuddle, then I put her into her crib, awake, and all is good.
She seems very attached to that last bottle...and I just don't know where to start, or if I should even worry about it yet?  It's just fresh in my head b/c we've just gotten rid of her daytime bottles afew days ago.  I wondered about giving her a sippy cup or her mealtime cups without the valve but... I'm just not sure b/c she likes that bottle so much!  And; she downs it and I know her cups are more work...  I don't know...As you can tell I'm running in circles right now :?

If anyone has any advice or words for me, that would be great!  I wrote about this while back but can't seem to find where I wrote it; so here I am again...

thank you in advance...

We just dropped it and she did great.  Granted I don't know that she was all that attached to it.  I was worried she wouldn't go to sleep, I was worried she wouldn't sleep through, but she did both.  The first few nights she just talked a bit longer than normal, but then went right to sleep.  One thing you could try though is to add a bedtime story after that bottle (before or after your cuddle) for a few weeks and then when you drop the bottle, she'll be used to the story being the last thing (or atleast in place of the bottle before the cuddle).  That's what we did with dd.  She learned that story was the last part of the routine so when we skipped the bottle and went straight to story, she knew what to do.  Some people simply replace that bottle with a sippy (or whatever she's using for meals), but at some point you want to brush her teeth before her last milk of the night so that's why we just went for dropping it and she did great.  You could always try it a few nights and see what she does...  Good luck!

Thank you so much Stacie!  That sounds like a great idea!!  We usually read her a story before her bath, but I'm going to change it and read it to her after her bottle  (before won't work as she's fussing to get it  )

Thank you again, really great idea... i won't be taking the bottle away for a few months yet as she's not even a year yet, but I'll let you know how it rides out...

One more question...  When you got rid of that last bottle before bed; did you give a snack somewhere between supper & bed?

Some people do give snacks and I thought about it, but honestly didn't really have time with the schedule she had then.  I think it was 5:30 dinner (which took her awhile as she played and ate and played and ate...with her food of course), then bath at 6:15 or 6:30 and then into bed at 7ish.  She's not a huge eater and I couldn't really sneak it in between dinner and bath and didn't really want to add it to her bedtime routine of doing it between bath and bed (although some people do).  We brush teeth at bathtime and didn't want to offer food or milk after that as a regular habit so we just cut it out after she was used to the story being last instead and she was fine.  Good luck!
