Title: when to start Follow-on milks e.g 'Sma Progress' formula
Post by: Dina on August 11, 2005, 15:35:14 pm
Just wanted to know when should I start using follow-on milk.  The tub says from 6 months when solids have been established.  My baby boy is 5 mths old and has been on 3 solids a day for the past month now.

Should I change to the follow on milk now ?

Follow on shouldnt be started before 6 months and you dont have to switch to it at all as all the first milks are suitable for the first year (or longer if you wish). It does have a bit more iron in it but that can cause constipation in some babies. I did switch to it as it was cheaper and dd had no problems with it.

I never did. I didn't see the point really - just another transition to go through!

WE changed around 6 months because we thought it was the "right thing" to do.  but it gave dd terrible ocnstipation so we switched back to the regular and continued that until 12 months

Thanks for this posting -earlier in the week i was given the go ahead to return to "normal" formula afetr dd2 being on thickened for a while and was going to switch to the progress one (as she is almost 6 mo) and saw this post on Friday.  she already suffered from constipation  and it was worse on thickened formula.  you have saved me from more constipation issues as she has pooped regularly these past 3 days since returning to the regular (no added iron) kind.
