Title: Spoon/Utensil Use?
Post by: shines on August 17, 2005, 23:48:49 pm
At what age did your lo start using a utensil to feed her/himself? My lo is 10-1/2 months, and shows no sign of figuring out how to use a spoon. I'm not worried, just curious if there's something I could do to help. Same goes for sippy cup. She'll use it if I coax her, but if I set it on her highchair, she usually lets it fall on the floor. Don't think she's particularly thirsty at mealtimes. Thanks if you have any tips!

Tyler is almost 20 mo, and STILL isn't into feeding himself! I think he learned how to do it around 15 or 16 mo, and once the novelty wore off, it was "Mommy do." The sippy cup got tossed a LOT when he was your DD's age. We kept it available throughout the day for him to sip, and he started drinking from it more at mealtime around 13 mo or so.

I didn't do anything to "help" him learn, except give him a spoon when he reached for it. Same with the sippy cup...one day, he just started drinking from it. Since she sees you eat and drink, odds are that she knows what to do, but just hasn't gotten there developmentally yet. HTH!

DS is 10 months and loves his spiiy cup, it has handles so it is easy for him to use.  It took him 3.5 to 4 months to master (we started him on it at 6 months or so) but only likes juice or water in it.  Will not drink formula aout of it.

As for self feeding, he likes to eat with his hands and play drum with the spoon, but that's okay.  He will also let me feed him with the spoon.

HTH
