Title: Advice on freezing and reheating please
Post by: LisaM on August 22, 2005, 16:18:39 pm
This is really basic stuff I'm sure but I never really feel confident about whats right so advice would be great.

If for instance I have some frozen fish and defrosted it and then made some homemade fish fingers can I refreeze them (either cooked or still raw)?  If I can refreeze cooked fish fingers am I allowed to reheat them?  Same goes for chicken I am not sure about when you are allowed to reheat stuff and when not.

Thanks for helping a useless cook!

Lisa

The way I was taught is:

if you thaw raw food, you can cook it and refreeze it.
if you thaw cooked food, you shouldn't refreeze it.

the guy i buy our fish from said he does not recommend refreezing defrosted fish no matter what (cooked or fresh).  he gets this great fish (inexpensive and boneless) that i use for dd1 but as it is imported it comes to them frozen and then they sell it defrosted.  he said NO refreezing.

what he does for me now is takes the frozen pieces and cuts it to size for me so i can take it home and still freeze it in portions for Alex without it ever thawing until i need them.

as for fish for us adults i use a different standard since we have stronger immune systems     - i DO buy fresh fish and freeze it to use for Dh's green curry.  then when he makes it if there is extra we DO refreeze to have later.  i kind of use this looser standard for most food things for us VS. kids.

Hi,

I was always told never to refreeze food that has been frozen once before!

I would always be more cautious with childrens food then my own though
