Title: What cup for milk?
Post by: cjwagner77 on August 24, 2005, 17:04:33 pm
Dd is 12 months old.  We are going to start having milk just twice a day now, 8 oz each.  (I think unless the ped. tells us otherwise tomorrow.  But that is the amount I have read in a number of places.)  Anyway, we had been using a sippy cup that held 6 oz.  We need to change cups now.  I have taller sippy cups and I also have the ones with straws built in.  Have any of you used the ones with straws for milk?  And what did you think?  Did they get clean?

We have used all types of cups here.  The straws are good because they are easy to use.  But they can cause confusion if your child hasn't used them much and has learned to tip a sippy to drink.  We had many frustrations and/or spilled drinks when a cup with a straw was tipped up.  But once they get the hang of it, it isn't a big deal.  As far as cleaning, I take the straw out and put everything in the dishwasher.  Just don't leave milk sitting in a cup for hours and hours.

If you are using a smaller sippy, you may want to keep using it and just refill it.  It may seem overwhelming for a child to go from a small cup to a larger one with a lot more milk in it.  I liek the Take and Toss and other clear cups because I can see how much is in it.  None of our straw cups are clear.

Do you put the straws in something in the dishwasher, like a basket?  I think I am going to start using a variety of cups for milk.  Some how I started using the Take & Toss for water and the sippy cups like Evenflo, etc. for milk.  So when she sees someone else with a sippy, she thinks it is her milk.

I put the straws standing up in the silverware basket. I haven't had any of them fly out yet.  I have the biggest problem keeping the take and toss cups and lids from tipping over in the dishwasher. I usually weight them down by putting an upside bowl over them.

We used the smaller ones and kept refilling throughout the day, like Carolyn said. They were easier for Tyler to handle at first, and once he got a little older, we switched to bigger ones. I wasn't a big fan of the straw ones when Tyler was that age. He didn't learn how to set his cup down right side up when he was done instead of tossing it aside for a few months, and the straw cups spilled more than regular sippys when laying down or flying through the air. HTH!
