Title: Mom's Allergies - How many with kids with the same allergies
Post by: MrsKirky on August 26, 2005, 05:17:16 am
I have several food allergies - Melon, avocado, pears - Severe allergy to Melon.  My concern is...Will my son have the same allergies?  I have most of the allergies of both my parents.  I am a nurse and know the statistics, but am curious as to others' experience with this.

Thank you!

I have super sensitive skin and often break out from different fragrances in soaps, lotions, make-up, etc. I'm also allergic to Sulfa (a medication for those who aren't aware) and grass/dirt (freshly cut or dug).

DS is allergic to peanuts and trees. And also has excema and asthma.

DD (only 2 1/2 months) is allergic to dairy and from what I can tell soy.

Since ds is allergic to peanuts and I do bf I stay away from peanut butter, etc. in hopes that dd will not have the same reaction.

My mother has food related allergies to things like cucumber and watermelon and a sensitivity to nuts. And my dad has an allergy to sulfa drugs. None of my sibling or I have any of these! :D

Although my brother recently learned he's lactose intolerant...

Hi, I have excema and modeate asthma. I'm also allergic to nuts and fish. I have 9 week old Isaac. My midwife gave me some info on doing a special diet while pregnant and breastfeeding. I looked into it and decided it was worth giving it a go even though there aren't any guarentees it will work. So from 6 months pregnant and until I finish breastfeeding I'm doing a dairy and egg free diet. The literature also suggests stopping nuts and fish but I don't eat them anyway.
Not really an answer to your question but thought I would share and fingers crossed it will work for my special little boy :)

I've always had a sensitive stomach, dh's family has dairy intolerances, and both our kids were milk protien intolerant and Max was soy intolerant too. Now that I am trying to eat dairy and soy again, I'm finding that I'm not tolerating either very well. Max is outgrowing both intolerances.  :D

One mommy posted a while ago that a doctor told her they thought that a child's reaction to a mom's breastmilk wasn't necessarily the milk but the antibodies/reaction the mom had to a food she had eaten. So if I am soy intolerant, my body tries to fight the soy proteins, and Max gets my body's reaction in my milk and that bugs his system. Kind of an interesting thing to ponder...

Stacy-If I have no problem with milk or soy will my baby be less likely to have a problem with my breastmilk if I eat either of these?  I'm going to try to nurse this time but I worry about the things I eat.  If I eat LESS dairy will that help?

Aidan's had a lot of problems with milk, right?

Yes, less dairy would help, even while you are pregnant. Some moms find that they can eat yogurt just fine, but not ice cream or milk, once they start nursing.

I never realized I had a problem with milk/soy until I cut them out and tried to add them back.  :?

Stacy- I cannot imagine cutting our dairy and soy.  How did you know there was a problem?

Thank you all.  Food (no pun intended) for thought.  Pediatrician advised me not to introduce foods I am allergic to until after 1 year to DS.

Hi There,

I'm usually not on this board but I have lots of experience with Allergies.  I am deathly allergic to tree nuts and also allergic to tomatoes and egg whites.

My DD is allergic to Milk, egg whites, tomatoes, and peanuts. (assuming tree nuts and will never give her those)

She's never had a peanut but tested positive.  As you probably know you can't test positive for an allergy unless you've been exposed to the food at one time.

The only time she was exposed was in utero.  I ate peanut butter while pregnant and now she has an allergy to them.  I wish I would have known then!

Certainly food for thought. Could she have had peanut oil in anything?

My sister is has asthma, eczema, allergy to most raw fruit / veg (fine if cooked), nuts (except brazils) and to nickle.

My maternal grandmother has eczema, apart from that we have no family history of these allergies.

She was the 'classic' new allergy every 7 years.
eczema  since birth
7 - fruit / veg
14 - asthma
21 - nickle

And I have nothing.

I am allergic to broccoli (well, "sensitive" as the pediatricians put it), as is my mom, and so is my LO.
