Title: Only wants pears
Post by: klt on September 01, 2005, 10:32:58 am
I'm hoping people can give me some advice here!

My dd started on rice cereal a while ago and since 6 months old has tried pears, apples, carrots, sweet potato, banana and peach.  She was loving them all.....  However, the banana seemed to constipate so I gave her just pears for a couple of days and now she will only open her mouth for more pears.  Even if she is hungry and grabbing the spoon if she tastes something else she starts crying, and refuses to swallow it.

What should I do?  Mix pears into other things for a while?  How do you avoid making her into a really picky eater?

Whenever I'm giving a food dd doesn't really like, I scoop a bit onto the spoon, then put the food she does like on the front of the spoon.  Slowly, I'll lessen the favored food, but if she gags, I'll re-do the process. HTH

Exactly what Heather said.

Funny how they love pears!  Last night we mixed pears and gem squash and he ate it all.

Give it some time and keep offering the other foods too.

Isn't it amazing how them eating solids can stress us out?  :)

We had pears mixed with EVERYTHING for quite a while - you just gradually wean out the pears and it'll all come right.  Also, it can take up to 10-20 tastings before kids will accept a new food, so just keep offering and one day she'll gobble it up.

OMG - that's so wierd. I was just about to post exactly the same thing, just thought I'd check the forum 1st. C will only eat properly if whatever it is is mixed half and half with pears - he had broccoli and pear today - bleurghh!!

My question is, am I doing more harm than good here? Is he developing a sweet tooth, and will having pears 3 X A DAY   be bad for his tummy?

Or can I continue, and hopefully phase it out?

I tried that, but he swallowed the pear and spat out the carrot   :? .

Any comments/suggestions? TIA

My DS did the same thing - both with pears and sweet potatoes!  They already have a sweet tooth, if you think about it.  BM and formula are very sweet - have you tasted?  P.S.  I have been adding a little (few drops) of flax seed oil to bananas I made.  Helps a LOT w/ DS's constipation.  Pediatrician said it was OK - It's an omega-3 fat - good for us.  I just pop a gelcap with a clean pin and mix it in the cereal or banana.  Hope that helps!
