Title: Baby declares morning at 3.30am
Post by: Shine on September 01, 2005, 10:46:34 am
dd is 12 weeks
born 6lb 10 oz at 36 weeks
is on 3 ˝ hour EASY first feed 6 am and last a 8.30 pm
We have know solved all the pain problems affecting sleep and dd is happy on lactose free milk and has medication for her reflux, she no longer needs food in the night but yet she is still waking up around 3-4am.  It is not the waking itself that is the problem, it’s the fact she will not go back to sleep… She does not cry when she wakes and can be left in her cot for an hour or more awake in the dark, but she appears not to be tired.  I have recorded her daytime naps and they are not more than 3 ˝ hours in total, in fact they are usually no more than 45 mins each.  Her total sleep time in 24 hours is usually 10 hours, 12 at most, that is little more than I need!

I have had two or three nights where she has gone back to sleep (and woken an hour later and gone back to sleep etc.) until 5 or 6am, but the problem is she makes such a noise awake in her cot that the whole house is woken and remains awake from 3.30 am.
Any ideas?
TIA

This is a common problem for many parents.  Check this out.

Thanks - so is the idea I put her to bed earlier so she is less grumpy and then sleeps longer?

Should I also try to extend naps for the same reason?

How long is she awake for?  At 12 wks, awake time can about 1hr depending on babies.  You can try to extend the awake time by 10-15 min for a few days to see if this helps with the naps.  I also spent about 2 weeks in her room to help her transition to the second cycle of sleep by pat/shhh.  Just make sure that you don't overtired her.  Here are some things I did at that age.  Swaddle, very dark room, white noise, elevated crib (dd is a silent refluxer) and sleeping her on her side.

Her usual awake time is 2 hours or more. It goes something like

Wake at 3.30am (and stays that way for upto 5 hours!!)
Feed a 6am
Nap at 8am - 45 mins
Feed at 9.30am
Nap - 11am - 12.30pm / 1pm usual the longest of the day
Feed - 1pm
Nap at 4.15pm - 45 mins
Feed at 5pm
Nap 7pm - 45 mins
Bedtime routine starts at 8pm and asleep by 9pm.

Shine - I wouldn't extend her naps.  The only reason I did this with dd is so that I can get as slose to the bedtime as possible for that day.  I never try to over extend her usual awake time on days like this.  Once she is back on track we go back to the old times.    Have you tried maybe putting her down for naps a little bit earlier and try to extend her current naps?  Sleep begets sleep.  I recall reading another book where it states that the babies have a lighter sleep in early morning hrs and if they are not rested during the day, it can cause problems when babies are trying to fall back asleep during these times.  Try encouraging your lo to sleep more during the day even if it is an extra 30 min or so and see what happens.

I have moved her on to 4 hour EASY, so that the last feed is a df and I can put her to bed earlier.

Day 1 - Watched like hawk to put down for naps - 45 min nap am and pm, and a 2.5 hour lunchtime nap.
Bed at 6pm, df at 10pm woke at 2.30am, feed at 4.30pm back to sleep for 1.5 hours at 5am.

Day 2 -Same naps ( so at least she is getting a better middle of the day nap)
Bed at 7pm - played happily in cot in dark until she naturally dirfted off at 8.15pm
Df at 10.45pm woke at 3.30pm, feed at 4.30am

Day 3 - Awake until 7am, 45 min nap, feed at 8.45am, nap at 9.15am

So we are all to pot!

Normally she lasts the night in one nightime nappy, but since the df (also changed nappy then) she keeps waking up having wet the bed??

Not sure whether to stop df and make bedtime the last feed as before or try wake to sleep or both?
